After running through an mountainous slurry of mic's I've finally found my "flagship" and as per usual it wasn't what I expected. It's not like my voice is that fussy, any SDC, relatively detailed or flat(ish) or C800 style mic will work. The issue is I'm quite loud and it helps if I'm closer to the mic because of it, unfortunately that's where dynamic's or ribbons usually shine but none, not even the venerable MD441 had enough detail or sensitivity to get the best out of my vocals. What I needed is an SDC style stage mic I could use in the studio and the KMS 105 fit the bill perfectly there.
Point being is even after all these years I'm still surprised at which random mic works, I got a clip on from a singer using an AT2020 which sounded fantastic even though many seem to disregard that mic. I heard a French singer on a TLM-170 and that was great, Chris likes their AKG 120.. As for the KMS105 it's very similar to the KM184 but far less fussy. It's detailed, relatively neutral (besides that high end bump) and I know some don't like the KM184, heck even I think by itself the 184 is a weird sounding mic but in a mix I love them.

Add an AKG D770 or D790... To your Arsenal! Sound excellent. Cheap as chips.

Sound excellent. Cheap as chips. Despite this being RGO I've got too many mic's already Chris, need to sell a few off. If we're going down the cheap but lesser known mic's that are cool, I tried out an Samson MTR LDC years back and that was light, airy, never harsh, not all that distorted. The CAD M179 was an overperformer when they were actually cheap, some of the Line Audio stuff was good, I did like the GZ67 FET from 3U, I've not owned one but every clip of the Vanguard V4 I've liked.

Postscript... Got impressed into 3 and 4 Part Harmony BGV's in Laguna tonight*... On a M88!! (One Lead on a Dylan song/"Only a Hobo" in addition.) Hadn't sung in one of those Puppies, in over 20 years. (Sold my TG back then) ]Honestly, it was even better than I remembered. My score now, is if the M88 is "the 10". A D790 or D770 is around a "8.5 to 9" Range. Chris *Not to sound "whatever", but some of the "locked harmonies", showed lots of potential for us. Not quite_near_CS&N-yet.

Not quite_near_CS&N-yet. That certainly is a high score indeed, I'd give it a solid 7 out of 10 but that's only because there's so many good mic's out there. It is for me the best dynamic I've ever come across and I've been through quite a few. Umm, Sm57, Beta 57, 58, 7B, RE-20, Heil PR40, Audix OM7, Sennheiser 835 / 945 / MD421 / MD441-U, AKG D-7, AT 6100 and probably a few more.
I just seem to get along with the M88, it works great on cabs etc. as well and I think it will become my new live mic. It's not quite a secret at this point though is it? If I was giving a new project or self recording studio startup (even in this day and age) mic advice I'd say U67, Schopes MK4 and Beyer M88. With those in play sky's the limit..

You might also wish to consider a vintage Neumann KMS84. I have three of them and they are DIVINE!

You might also wish to consider a vintage Neumann KMS84. I have three of them and they are DIVINE! I've been through most of the Neumann catalogue over the years Ward, including the 84 / 56 / 54. Mainly because at one point, relatively speaking Neumann was both very popular and a lot cheaper over here, even now despite 20% on average price hikes post Covid take a U87AI for example. According to Sweetwater there's a $1K difference compared to an average reseller in Europe and on my end that also includes taxes plus shipping.
Thing is I actually honestly like the KM184 a bit better than the 84 but it really depends on what's in front of it. I've got an API 512V 3:1 tapped going through a darker Acme Opto and despite it's high end treble lift that most don't like, for me the 184 not only cut's better in a mix but in my chain it still remains as smooth as silk (even on brighter guitars). What really gets me is the price of second hand vintage today is beyond crazy and for the cost of a single KM84 you could buy all three of the items I've mentioned. Personally if I still had an 84 it would be on Reverb in a split second. Gotta love reputation though, the old 87 is better than the AI despite it being used on countless records to amazing effect. Well, that's great for the people selling them.
