Found some Sony MXP Equalizers racked as a pair with Neve power supply. Anyone used these equalizers? 4 band parametric with Q factor. Looking for something to use for tracking that has a touch of personality, but mostly is useable, reliable, and has decent headroom.

Useable, but I wouldn't define it as a "touch of personality" EQ.

What Bill said, with a little explanation. The MXP3000 was designed to pair with the 3348 dash machine, so it was a pretty clean console, major issue the OPAMPs are unobtainable. The cool selling point was you could order API EQ’s to fit it.

When movers ruined mu TAC, a couple MXP3000s were in the running. ONe belonged to Ramsey Lewis and was not in good shape, but I did get to hear the different EQ models in it. The other was an 95% done deal, but Randy Blevins doesn't understand that phones dial out, which is also why I didn't by a JH24 from him. My JH came from your town, Eric.

Learned on one of those Sonys. Good board. But not an EQ I'd bother with as an outboard piece unless the price was very, VERY right.

Yeah I’d imagine sound wise it would be something like a classAB clone of SSL? Unless the Neve PSU is class A? (There is a class a mod for the 3k)
I’ve seen modules online, and thought about racking them. I thought it’s just Texas instrument in the EQ. You should confirm.
one potential benefit of these over say a current SSL 500 module would be no surface mount, simple PCB, so long term ownership and repair would be potentially easy. Tom Graefe who designed MCI Sony boards runs a message group, and says not to replace capacitors anywhere. They were specd to be very reliable thanks to Sony’s pockets, so that’s good. Pots and switches likely will be good as well. Again you should confirm no scratchy stuff.
Also, ask what’s the IO? Transformers? Unbalanced?

Years ago, I had that console in my studio for a year before the SSL 6048 arrived. As a mixer, it’s amazingly, transparently-great! Hi-Fi awesomeness! As a console with preamps and EQ, so boring. Could never vibe with them, because they had none. My studio partner felt the same.

Spent over a decade on a 3036. I’ve used the parametric EQs and they are pretty bland. But I was also curious about the passive inductor EQ. But yes Avalon and API made modules as well as John Hardy. Probably others I’m forgetting

Yeah, I’ve been eyeing those. I have 4 Kush Electras in my 500 rack. I love them. Problem is I only have 1 slot left out of 10!

Yeah I had heard about the Avalon EQ but only ever saw the pre and of course the John Hardy pre. Of course now I’m trying to figure out who’s machine that was !

I think they were moving and cleared a bunch of stuff out. Matt Talbot from HUM bought the big Tannoy mains and I gave him some gas money to grab the deck while he was there.

i don't like that they advertise it as mastering grade when it's not switched but dbxpro.com/en-US/products/530 is even cheaper if you don't mind the slight detail loss of dbx equipment and nothing too surgical.

I saw a video recently with a guy showing each eq, but cant find it. I did come across this video however, so this is probably a good review. Says it’s his fav for heavy guitars:
(By the way.. the Sony hybrid opamps are not in there. Those look like Texas Instruments. AFAIK The special Sony op-amps look like big rectangular butterflies landed on the board, none of that there.)
