I have the 4 channel SPL hardware. It does sound better than the SW, IMO, when adding attack to a snare or sustain to smaller rooms. If you just typically kill the sustain, the plugs are fine.

Agreed. Killing sustain or adding just a hint of attack on the plugin works. But really changing the envelope and adding a bunch of attack or sustain, the hardware does a much better job

I actually just took a hardware TD (SPL) out of the rack, because I was able to get equally satisfactory results from software (2 different software, 1 was better at attack, the other at sustain).Checked my notes,
Attack = NI transient master is best Sustain = smack attack is best

Its my usual go to ITB.

I use the Elysia Nvelopes and they are fantastic. Better than anything else. My SPL is sitting in the store room.

I'm curious what has you looking at HW instead of plugin. For me a transient designer gets used on lots of tracks for relatively minor tweaks. I could never afford that many HW units! And, the tweaks are so minor in many cases that it wouldn't be worth the effort to print the track. I guess every now and then I'll make a major change to a kick drum or something that might introduce (intentional) distortion, but not often. What's your thought process?
