Saw these are now $100 online so I decided to get one to try - cheaper than the "vintage" predecessors that seemed to be favored for certain things. Just curious if anyone has gotten one and their thoughts. Booth Junkie did a speaking comparison against quite a few mics and I was surprised how well it held its own. "Darker" is a typical description, especially against a U87 and Lewitt mics, but seems "fuller" than the typical chinese capsule mics, including an NT1 and AT2020.
Will post again in thread once I've had a chance to compare it to my main mic, a Lewitt 840...
Thoughts if you got 'em.

An AKG P120 (best $100 MDC or LDC I've tried) vs. that CAD would be interesting. The lower noise floor of the E100sx, does make it more flexible in mic placement though in any event. It has a narrow Cardiod Pattern too. Nice starter for typical "at home" recordings. The $ave up for a better capsule based mic etc. Chris

The CAD Equiteks are not bad mics at all. Not great, not quiet, not about to make others fold up their booths and never show their faces at NAMM again, but not bad. I have a 1991 Equitek II

With a self noise (A Weighted) of just around 9.5 db... Grasshopper asks, is that somewhat noisy? (The P120 is double(!) ) Thanks, Chris

It could be that the different iterations all have different self noise specs.
I believe the newest models, the sx, were also the most affordable, so the reduced price may not be as eyebrow raising as the e100 or e100s being 100 dollars.
A quick aside, but does anyone have a better shockmount for these mics? I picked up a used e100s a while back, sounds fine, but I hate the shockmount.

I know we're veering off topic, but still think a 3U Black or Teal would be money better spent

If you're close miking, my $$'s on the P120 for clear tone quality. Over the 3U's.
I find 3U's CM-1's subtly/slightly veiled. Which can be a cool Effect though. Chris

If you are looking for a cheap mic the newer ROde NT1 black ones are solid performers. PLus a host of others. One of the comparisons I listened to was the NT1 and I preferred the sound of the CAD better. Obviously it requires real world comparison on a specific source as to which is "better" but initial impression for me was the CAD, which surprised me a bit. I figured at that point, it was worth throwing the dice.

Undecided whether to try these CAD 100sx for toms or is there anything else decent for $100?

Oktava 219's are a "Dr. Bill" fave. But usually are a bit more $$. Chris

These are my 2 favorite mics for toms. Normally, I'll head towards the 219's first, as - like many Oktava's - they have a reedy, woody tone. Works for toms for me. If I want something more modern sounding, I'll head towards the m179's though. Either will work for me though.

I'm pretty sure I still have a pair (of 219s) in the closet. I don't chase 'modern' drum sounds, but the m179s always just worked well on toms and I never took them off.

In the $100 Down/Grey Poupon class...
How are Brass Capsule 414 Styles and 67 Tube Styles on Tom? Grasshopper asks. Thanks, Chris P.S. 421/441's too? Guessing MD421 is preferred over current MKII.

So I never got a chance to compare the E100sx to my 840 because the E100sx fell out of its shock mount when I was moving it - the band broke. That surprised me a bit, but I have read these shock mounts are not the greatest - actually, quite a pain. So I ended up returning it - got tired of futzing with it and my AKG P220 bested it on acoustic.
Then, about a week later, I stumbled across a great condition E100s, the USA Series one, box and all for a not too ridiculous price. I hate the shock mount, but peoples of the internet have raved about this mic, especially for VO. So I got it, and am hoping the rubber bands don't break on this one. Also hoping I like how it sounds, but I suspect I will

I never really got on with CAD, though I’ll admit there was some kind of symbiotic reaction between the original E100 and the original Mackie pres that worked. Part of what pissed me off with CAD was that almost every studio that was a CAD evangelist was opened up as a dealer.
