M88 is great on guitar amps, and a ton of other stuff.

M88 would be my preference for guitars.
For bass amps and kick drum I dig RE20.

M-88 has better isolation, RE20 has a broader pattern.

RE20 was clearly engineered by a blind person. Sounds good, looks... painful.
M88 all the way. Love it on kick. Love it on cabs. Love/hate it on vocals (when it works it's golden, when it's bad on vocals it's pretty bad).

(Cues "Isn't She Lovely"/Stevie Wonder) Wait, was that really done on an RE20 or is that a blind joke? Or both?

Electro-Voice design team... 1968
"Hey guys, let's make a microphone that perfectly evokes the feeling of being in a cinderblock room with flickering fluorescent lights. It can sound good, but singing into it should feel depressing."

Not sure by 1976 (Isn't She Lovely). But "definite maybe". Starting from scratch (other than my D790)... First buy M88 Second buy RE20 In Dynamics. Then $ave for 441! Chris

Both! Yeah I said it! The variable D loading and lack of proximity effect make them very different mics.

I only have RE20s because my father on his deathbed said to me, "Son, never use a dynamic microphone larger than your manhood". My mother's nickname for him was "Big Daddy" and as far as I can remember he never wore short pants.
