I got Vibraslapped in the face, on my last trip onstage. Ended up with a case of serious Percussion*. The arriving EMT's treated the Perps instead. With free shots! I tell ya. No respect. Chris *Shakers/Maracas/Rain Stick/You name it. Did you mic this with an RE20 or an M88 ? SM7B!!!

Other than DrBill. (I keed you bp) A couple of the Local Pro Musicians... Want me to start playing Percussion onstage. OK, I'm out. But just one thought first,,,,,,,, Learn to count to 4 first. Reflecting on your wise words... I'm bringing my good buddy Chuck Norris onstage with me. Why? Chuck can count to Infinity. Twice. Chris

Did you mic this with an RE20 or an M88 ? SM7B!!! Almost as good as a 635a or Tandy/radioshack 38

I can always "count on you" to be... Realistic. Was the Tandy "Inspired by" Jessica? (the famed Actress-not Song) Back in her day she was quite the Beauty BTW. Chris P.S. I remember Bob O. sayin' 635a's are Kewl for Purrcusion. He's kinda a knowledgeable Kat. LOL!

A good trick for me is to start playing a shaker or maraca 1 measure before, and cut that warmup measure out in the DAW. I get a pickup note on the “and” right before the downbeat otherwise. It also takes me a measure or 2 to get the right feel.

Great suggestion. Primarily will do some Rehearsal Recordings. To be better prepared onstage. Chris

Most egg shakers won't cut through a live band. Get a decent size shaker that will compete with amps. A larger diameter shaker will work better for slower tempos than the thin ones and vice versa. I like the LP leather maracas - more musical sounding than the plastic ones but pricey. Options are good.

If you're stuck playing the shaker, at least let the crowd wonder "wait, is that guy up there shaking a can of Schlitz? "Schlitz...the shaker that made Milwaukee famous".

I know absolutely nothing about shakers.....but that didn't stop me from getting a set a while back, just because I thought they were cool looking - I mean, looks cool, sounds cool? Gon Bops Mic Shaker. Whoop 'em Gon Bop Style?
In any case, here is a demo of them from some guy on the web.

I remember being on a session with a guy who spent a lot of time talking about the difference between metal/plastic and wood on percussion. Should be something to laugh at but the truth is that he's right. I often find myself preferring the sound of the handmade stuff. This now enters "the pick matters"-territory to quote the late great Slipperman, but hey, we're already insane so might as well include the perc stuff too.
I will say the one BGrotto mentioned is often my go-to and the one I can play the easiest.

Most egg shakers won't cut through a live band. That's why I like to give a pair of egg shakers or mini maracas to some singers. Keeps them busy and if they are incapable of keeping a steady rhythm, it doesn't distract the band or audience (but still looks fun on stage). Just make sure they keep those shakers and tambourines away from the vocal mic. Nothing worse than having a tambourine slam through the mains at full volume - especially when it's not in time. oh wait, maybe one thing. Having a rub board mic'd up loud, when that person (who also happens to be in a relationship with the bandleader) cannot keep time to save their life.* *yep, I quit that band pretty quickly...

I love to pair different sounding shakers, like something a little dark and crunchy with one of those little Meinl sizzle ufo-looking guys. Or a small one-shot with something double sided, giving you a cool accent pattern.
