This is obviously more of a live-sound question, but anyone know of a harmonizer that actually works well for live vocals? probably pedal format, but just looking for options so whatever works (although probably needs to be under $300 or so not that Eventide H9000... or even the H90). I'm aware of a few. I know in theory some will use a guitar signal to "detect" the key, but I've not always seen them work that well in practice.
In my local band, our lead guitarist is moving out of state. He also sang a lot of nice harmony vocals (a lot of 3rd above sorta stuff) and we've been unable to find a new member that is able to do this (which is funny because in Austin EVERYONE plays guitar. But I've determined many either A) can't sing, or can't hear harmonies or B) they are lazy and only want to play the same old shite they've been playing for the last 30 years (or more). Can't teach an old dog new tricks...?

I had the TC Harmony G-XT - worked well as you plugged your guitar in and it would then generate melodic major/minor 3rds relative to the chords being played. It's a Larger unit than the Harmony above, but sounded great. Trick is to have the mix down to 35-40% so you hear it, but it's not in your face.

So the TC Harmony G-XT is exactly what the singer in my band ended up getting (bought it used). When the band is going it actually sounded pretty good and sometimes I thought our other singer was there. But it was easy to overdo it, and since this was the first time using it, he definitely overdid it a few times. Like in softer passages - it sounds really cheesy, or even demonic (if he was singing low). I think he had it set to do a 3rd above and maybe a 5th below (which goes into cookie monster mode when singing low notes). Anyway, as long as we use it minimally it might fill the gap until we get another good singer.
