Hey guys. What's in your locker? what you couldn't live without to track traditional rock/pop piece bands? Whats your love affair mic? what's your swiss knife? what's the next on the "want" list?

Beyer M201 (workhorse for everything, some of them, poor man's 441), Sennheiser MD441 (love it), SM58, chinese big ribbon (really, e.g. guitar cabinets), tube LDC (DIY, my baby), SM57 (2 for guitar cabinet and whatever)...

Recently picked up a pair of AEA Limited Edition R-84's. I'm fairly certain that I love them. The kind of thing where when I did my first mix with them, I figured I'd found a pair that I would bequeath to my children.

All the AEA stuff is awesome...I would add the Royer 121 to that.

Royer 122, Lauten Atlantis and Mojave MA-300 have been the recent workhorses here.

I couldn't live without the m160. I've had great results on guitar amps, as overheads, vocals, spot mic for cymbals and hihat, and anywhere where you would use a ribbon when you are tracking an acoustic band in one room (accordion, clarinet, trumpet...)
I guess love affair mic would be the 4038. I really dig how this mic "hears" things. Secret weapon for tenor sax.
Swiss knife probably the e22s. It's hard to find a source where it doesn't get the job done well.
About my "list"... I sometimes miss having a 121. A nice mic that takes the worry out of micing a loud cab with a ribbon.

Another one aiming to own a 121. Although a pair of coles would be lovely too (good results on overheads on certain rooms and genres) Beta 91 has been a faithful companion for kick in and pretty much took away my need of sound replacing anything.
KSM141 turned into a bit of a swiss army pair. relatively cheap (specially from the examples above), and pretty effective. as a pair, or micing single sources.

Sm7 lover here. Not that I think it's the most interesting mic in the world, but it takes eq so well that I could use it on about any source. Generally it ends up living inside the kick drum.
I can't wait to buy a beyer m160. The first time I heard that mic on an ac-15 is one I won't soon forget. I wouldn't mind having these things laying around like they were 57's.

SM7 are really versatile. I use it for vocals on rooms/booths that sound bad or "roomy" and I want to avoid it. After that, finds it's place on bass cabs, snares. Interesting the kick in. Have to give it a go. But for now I'm in love with the Beta91 ))

My go to mics are:
Gefell M930 (overheads, acoustic stuff) Gefell UM70S (guitar cab, vocals, utility) Audio technica ATM25 (toms mainly) Royer R121 (guitar cab, bass cab, rooms, utility) SM57 (snare, guitars) Oktava MK012 (under snare, overheads, rooms, utility) Beyer M201 (snare over and under, utility) Oktava MK219 (rooms, acoustic stuff, utility) Apex 460 (vocals, acoustic stuff) Audix D6 (kick in)
I have other mics but those are the ones I typically end up using for most things.

right now my must go to mics are: 57s for most stuff, snare top/bot, toms, cabs Audix D6 - replaced b52 from kick in and replaced md421 from floor tom, love it! Oktava mk012 - ohs, guitar, stereo operations b52 - guitar and bass cabs I got a TLM49 for most vox, but with really high pitched singers or sibilant voices im loving my SM7 / RM-5 combo (RM-5 = Ribbon mic by Artur Fisher)
Svart is your Apex 460 modded?

Royer 121 (through the AEA RPQ500). Sennheiser 441 and an older 421 from europe. The DIY U87 has been terrific as has the DIY C12. For vocals, I've been using a shure KSM44 for a lot of things with really great results, very clean sound. Amongs the other dozens of rabble in there the only other thing of real note is the Shure SM7B... (also thru the AEA RPQ pre) just plain AWESOME at everything.

Locker? 57, 58, 012, 421, mxl144, Royer sf12, sm81, sm7b, CAD e100, d112, NT1, AT2020. I think that's all I have. It's really the result of trying to get tried and true mics at the outset with a few cheapies thrown in. Needing to branch out now.
Can't live without? 57, sf12, sm7b are most important to me.
Whats your love affair mic? Don't have one yet.
What's your swiss knife? Nothing really functions in this capacity for me.
What's next on the "want" list? I think I want to try the MJE-K47H capsule for the 012. Any thoughts on that here? My 012s are not modded. Truth is, I don't use 012s much since I picked up the sf12, so I don't want to pay to mod them, but I am open to it if the mod is crucial to the MJE capsule being a lot better as a result. Input on this would be appreciate if anyone has insight.

Wreck, that's the right attitude, to go for the good stuff first even if it means having less overall stuff. I also can't say that I heard too much difference between modded and unmodded MK012s. Some folks like the sound, some don't. Truth is that placement is crucial and moving the mic a couple inches can make all the difference in the world, moreso than changing out a cap or two can. I'd say leave them alone if you don't have a problem with the sound.

+1 for Beta 91 for all things modern kick sound. Awesome. For more vintage kick sounds AKG D12 could fit the bill. (Also, it can be used for bass cabinets and even vocals sometimes...)

The D12 is a tricky one. Most of the D12 I've ran across are not in work condition. If you are in london and rented from FX rentals etc, you'll know what I mean.
Although it's a great kick sound when they are in good condition
For vintage-y stuff I tend to try 67s, TLM170, RE20 and if the studio has some oldies/goldies I'll always play with those.
Have not tried the re-issues yet

Swiss Army knife: MD421. Great for everything. Love affair: MD421. It has never let me down.

my gripe with 421 is that they have a very specific character which for me made them cool on a certain list of applications, but certainly not an allrounder, and a hard one to justify keeping around because the maintenance cost of these guys are ridiculous. The spare parts are the most overpriced parts I've seen (except for the neumann £200 shockmount)

certainly not an allrounder I'm tempted to accept this challenge, and record a song with 421s on everything

ha! I would be really happy to see it I only have a pair of them on me and i'm not due on a commercial studio anytime soon so please go for it FWIW last time I had a similar conversation was with a SM57 and it did not work! but the 421 is in a different category all together and, as I said, because of it's colloration I always assigned it to a few things in my head and kept with that. I may have been wrong and too close minded!

I have to second that the MD421 is a one-two trick pony. Allbuttonmode, I DOUBLE DOG dare you to use it on everything and prove us wrong!

I knew I'd regret writing that... But, what the hell! Challenge accepted! I am about to spend a week or so in the studio with a paying client, so it will have to wait. I'm not about to test this out on them
