Anyone change membership from ASCAP to BMI, or other? What is the process like?
What is your favorite PRO, and why?

At this point they all suck.
- BMI has been bought out by venture capitalists as of late, and the future is (IMO) sketchy. Their recent "sell off" payout was not transparent, and not encouraging. - ASCAP is equally bad, maybe worse with internal...um...let's call it politics, and for TV/Film writers is problematic with their survey system. Archaic. - SESAC is pretty much invitation only. Used to be hot, but I don't hear much about them anymore. They have been good for writers doing commercials.
I think it's a crap shoot at this point in time. The powers that be are not smiling kindly on writers / publishers.
As for transferring your catalog - it can be anything from easy to incredibly difficult - if you transfer your existing library to your new PRO. I've got 44,000 titles with BMI, so it would be a nightmare. Some people leave their old titles at their existing PRO and have their "new" titles come up at their new affiliation. Not sure how that works.

I'm with BMI. I've noticed in the last year or so that royalties have really fallen off. I asked them to look into it and they tell me all but one album have no artist attached to them. Of course, that didn't used to be the case but mysteriously it all vanished. I added a new title to my works on Friday, including the artist, and low and behold, there is no artist for it now. Go figure. I find it really hard to get paid for any royalties.
The fact that I can't even edit a work is very problematic. We are completely at their mercy to fix what they deleted to begin with. Not happy about it. I could have lost tens of dollars....

They (BMI) have just introduced new software to manage/track your works a couple of days ago. I have not tried it yet. It's under your online user account.

I am on BMI as well and the only few dollars I've ever gotten were because I submitted songs that were performed live. And just checking now, all of my other song submissions seem to have the "artist" field blank even though that's definitely not how I submitted them. Also some songs have been sitting at "society review" for probably 5 years now. So yeah, I'm glad I never paid for the membership (which is actually what made me decide on BMI over ASCAP at the time - imagine if I was paying for this level of incompetence?)
