I dunno… I hear that model doesn't have much gain RCA OP-6's have ungodly amounts of gain approaching 90 db. The Retro one falls in line with that. R Obviously, you missed the joke Yes, it's has more gain than one would ever need!! Nobody missed the joke! I think the dry answer was a return joke!

What's the Fearn preamp based on? Same thing? Different?

Been away from civilazation a few days but have been looking at that first pic on my tiny phone. Wow, very interested in how Phil's approach is, and how they'll look of course I have two originals rebuilt/refurbished by Stephen Sank. Coolest pre ever imo, and I agree that for a new clone, who'd do this better than RI?! Mine are like for ribbons only because of input inpedance. Wanted to use them w my condensers too, but never had time to work out a solution. Should be any easy fix, like special cable with resistor. So I wonder how the RI version will tackle that. The most special thing about the OP6 I believe are the xformers. The unit was built to be mobile with the operator walking away from truck with really long distance cables, so the xformers are massive and part of delivering the high gain/low noise. I'm NOT an expert, this is just what I've been told. But I can't wait to see how RI solved the xformer thing. These came into production in the late 1930s... Sooo cool of RI to pick up again almost 80 yrs later! jeez Paul!!! i gotta get over there, you own a dream rig man!

What's the Fearn preamp based on? Same thing? Different? Seems 'inspired by'. BTW, check out Doug's manuals. Really nice read about his designs. Far too appetizing though.. www.dwfearn.com/VT-1-VT-2Man.pdf

Ok, some more OP6 porn for you, from stripped down to rebuilt (Stephen Sank's pics). Notice the FAT ground wire that Stephen put there and the big transformers.

I hear that the chicks are better in Sweden. I silently praised Ward for not bringing up that old cliché in his wonderful song, especially on a male dominated forum like this. But now JC, what to do with you?..

Actually, I'm amazed that Retro only costs what it costs. Considering a new LA2A is $3100. And look at the inward connections stuff.

I think you're thinking of the 2 ch Fearn, the VT2, but the one channel Fearn, VT1 is $2650 at VK

The Thermionic stuff is super expensive too.
I just have a hard time justifying that much cash for a single channel of preamp only. I'm happy with much lower cost, high quality preamps. Compressors though are a different story. Inexpensive compressors haven't brought the same thing to the table.

It begs the rhetorical question....Does a $1000 bottle of wine taste $995 better than a $5 bottle to a wino?
Seriously though, I guess no other pre can do what this does? Although, like all of us here I'd love have this in my rack I'll have to keep slummin it with my Manleys, ISA 110's and VP28s...

I guess it's safe to say it's not priced for everybody at $3500, but there are definitely going to be those that line up for it!
