RCA OP-6's have ungodly amounts of gain approaching 90 db. The Retro one falls in line with that.

Another Retro piece going into my rack.lol It's odd... I think that this guy just goes into my dreams after the pieces that will go after my taste buds the most. I cannot wait until this comes out.

R I know 0 about the original, i assume it has that ridiculous amount of gain for the ribbon mics it was designed for? anyone know the history behind this? i guess i should google it...mehhh... more stuff to covet.. |

Been away from civilazation a few days but have been looking at that first pic on my tiny phone. Wow, very interested in how Phil's approach is, and how they'll look of course I have two originals rebuilt/refurbished by Stephen Sank. Coolest pre ever imo, and I agree that for a new clone, who'd do this better than RI?! Mine are like for ribbons only because of input impedance. Wanted to use them w my condensers too, but never had time to work out a solution. Should be any easy fix, like special cable with resistor. So I wonder how the RI version will tackle that. The most special thing about the OP6 I believe are the xformers. The unit was built to be mobile with the operator walking away from truck with really long distance cables, so the xformers are massive and part of delivering the high gain/low noise. I'm NOT an expert, this is just what I've been told. But I can't wait to see how RI solved the xformer thing. These came into production in the late 1930s... Sooo cool of RI to pick up again almost 80 yrs later! Attachments:

They were a remote broadcast amplifier the RCA 44 microphone that required lots of gain. They've always been considered the best sounding preamp available for ribbon and dynamic microphones. Neumanns had transformer resonances using them that gave ultra-bright results unless you put a matching pad on them.
If one wants an exotic vintage preamp, this is the gold standard.
