Audition a dozend headphones to hear which fit your ears and which combine with your inner ear for a sound you can work with. Each inner ear is a bit different so you will get other results than somebody else with the same headphones. Then keep a few of those you like. I have tracking phones with gel earpads and those are the most comfortable to wear for prolonged hours. Coming second are Beyers with (custom) thicker padded earpads.

Big fan of the Ollo S5X. Excellent sonics, comfortable to wear for long stretches, and very affordable. They have an easy and generous demo policy. Try them out! New to me. But I could do a pair of these and a pair of Kalis. Anyhow why the 5s over the 4 for example. They seem to be billing the 5s for atmos, which I don’t do. Cheers, Geoff

Not sure if it’s possible up here in Canuckistan but I am going to look into it. Thanks for the tip. Cheers, Geoff

I love my Audeze LCD-5 headphones. Crazy expensive but probably the best purchase I’ve made in a long time. Honestly less fatigue than with speaker. Just looked up what those go for. Yikes! Cheers, Geoff

Cheers, Geoff For what it’s worth I think I paid $2750 from a dealer, and they regularly have B Stock sales. Honestly I’ve spent that much on microphones I rarely use so something I wear for 6 to 8 hours a day it really has already paid for themselves The LCD-X and MM-500 are a nice option.

Think of them as "anything that sounds good on them will translate well" almost like NS10 earbuds, but without the painful 2Khz.. They're very neutral.

I always throw on my old earbuds to check mixes when I’m done in the studio, but the ear buds have that stupid Apple connection, so I can’t actually use them in the studio. For 10 bucks, it’s totally worth a shot! Thanks for the recommendation!

If you get serious about Audeze, I'm happy to share my horrendous support/replacement/swindle experience. Granted, it was the LCD-1...their cheapest open back mixing phones at the time, but I'll never buy from them again. Per the swindle, I ended up with LCD-2's, and they gathered dust. I got the feeling that it was only the LCD-X and up that people loved. I'll never have the experience. :-)

Been enjoying Dan Clark Audio E3 for two weeks. Spectacular !
I wouldn't mind cardioid Me Geithains, but I hear so much with the E3 already...
Imma try again the DCA Stealth (LCD5 price tag) with a special set of screws to improve the clamp. The seal was bad the first time I tried them. The sound though... Wow.

I've opted for the Shure SRH1840 open backed after auditioning just about everything in a wonderful shop called K55 in Zürich. I had a budget but to me the SRH1840 beat out pairs over twice the price. I've found them to be very neutral in color, detailed across the frequency spectrum with more than decent separation down low, non-fatiguing and they are very lite in weight. We are renting and there is a two year old child sharing a wall to my room next door, so....I'm really happy that I bought them. I'm tracking with the ATH-M50Xs.
If you've liked the Shr940s you'll probably like the 1840s.
