www.audio-scape.com/vanguard-audio-labs/v13ck12This looks very interesting. I really like the V44S V2. Not sure I need another tube mic (crazy talk) but if I did, I'd be looking at this. I imagine it might give a bit of the 251 flavor. I don't like super bright mics, but Ben's CK12 is said to be a bit more tame on the high end. Someone needs to buy this and tell me it's horrible so I don't end up buying it anyway. :-)

Ya, should be a really cool combo! That circuit is definitely going to add more mojo to that capsule than a C12'ish circuit. Especially with that tube, you're going to end up with a much "warmer" and softer top end than a 251!

Maybe… Enough people asked about that combo, I think Derek had a few capsules left and decided to just do it.

Ya, exactly. Maybe… Enough people asked about that combo, I think Derek had a few capsules left and decided to just do it. it's a super fun combo. The capsule is the beating heart of any microphone - you change the capsule, and you are REALLY going to change the sound of the whole thing. Nothing I've ever swapped out in a mic will have nearly the effect as the transducer does. It certainly doesn't sound "like a V13" anymore, but it doesn't quite sound like anything else either. I'd rather put a new color on your sonic palette and in the pro audio world than the 500th shade of "U47 green" anyways. The custom shop thing we started doing last year has been very rewarding for me personally. it lets me experiment within my existing gear and get my mic tweaking fix, without the prohibitive costs of starting up a brand-new product.

Very tempted by this. I keep going back and forth on picking this up as another vocal mic or just changing the capsule on one of my CV4's to a BN-CK12. hmmmm

But, it’s such a shame to waste a good capsule or potentially damage it in the mod ?
Prudency dictates, purchasing the new mike as an exercise in well considered risk management !

My wife would hate you.... :-) I've done a lot of mic mods. So far I've only made them better. No total disasters yet. But, you have a point. Can anyone have too many tube mics? I have six already and seven is a more lucky number....

Don’t speculate: gather more empirical data to test your “luck” theory !

I got a demo of the V13. I only had time to try it on one singer so far. It's true that it really does not sound like any other mics that I own. Compared to a U47 or U67, it's completely different. The V13 does not have either the low end girth of a 47 or the mid push that a 47 & 67 have. It does have the smoothest top end of anything I've used other than ribbons. It does not sound dark to me. It just doesn't have that 4-5k push in the upper mids. For this particular alto, it wasn't the right fit. It sounded fine but a bit boring. Sometimes it's the odd pushes in frequencies that make me pick a specific mic. If this vocalist had a nasty harshness, the V13 would solve that. Honestly, I was expecting more low mids but it didn't have that chest voice thing. I will try it on a few other singers as well as piano in the next few days. Anyone with a V13 have a favorite use?

Fits Josh Turner very well.* His YouTube channel was Josh Turner Guitar This is not Josh Turner, the Country Bass Baritone singer. Chris *Josh's Tenor is very reminiscent of Paul Simon's 35+ years ago.

mcirish - is this demo with the CK12 capsule? Nope. They are out of those. Derek sent me a Gen 2 V13 (stock).
