I need a no-frills rack mount DI box. There's a DB4 second hand locally for $80 and seems to go for around $100 or so online. The current model is the DB4a and it's like $499.
To me they look completely identical. Is there a reason for the disparity other than general inflation and manufacturing costs? They're all made by Rapco, right?

Inflation, might be using a new OEM for transformer.

So... solid unit? Does what it says? I just need a cleaner way to route hi-z and/or line signals to the line inputs on the back of my console.

It’s not sexy, but yeah ProCo DB series are road and studio proven Passive DI’s. You could do a lot worse for the same amount of $.

While I'll agree that they are solid, I don't think Procos sound very good

But then, 4 dis for $80...not sure how you're going to beat that Yeah, and it's not for keeper parts really. It's for direct acoustic, direct electric which will be re-amped or replaced, and direct organ which will also be re-amped or replaced. So it just needs to work and not fail, doesn't need to add anything. It's annoying having a bunch of wires and boxes crossing the floor for instruments that I don't even really care about how they sound anyway. Why should a crappy sounding direct acoustic guitar get the right to make my room look ugly!

Years ago I tried to convince the guys at ProCo that a DI in an electric outlet box would be cool for the studio market, it would be like a mic wall plate for instrument level. Everybody thought I was nuts.
