Has anyone compared these two on vocals and bass?

I can't comment on the BLA... I understand its modeled after CLA's specific REV A/Bs that have mods or drifted components or what not... but I have used the Purple alot and other blue stripe variants. The Purple has a top end push to it that is really nice for vocals, like a blue stripe, but in a different way. I think you would probably be happy with either.

Haven’t directly compared but have owned/used both.
I would say they’re two different animals.
The MC77 sounds more like what would you expect from an 1176, and it does a damn good job compared to a lot of other 1176 emus.
Bluey is based on CLA’s modded blue stripe. It’s thicker, classier, and definitely more oriented toward vocals. It’s almost tube-like. One of my favorite HW comps for sure.
Edit: just realized you’re talking about the Purple HW! Not sure why I immediately thought plugin. Haven’t used a HW MC77 yet.

Not side by side, but I have owned both. From memory, like others have mentioned, the Purple is what you'd expect a great 1176 to sound like. Great unit! The Bluey is a different beast, even when compared to the other Rev A clones. It is in general faster and much more heavy handed which I don't mind, especially considering it has a wet/dry blend. If you're looking for a great all around compressor to track and/or mix with, I'd go with the Purple. If you're looking for more of a mix insert that imparts a lot of character, I'd go with the Bluey.

I have both. The Purple is like a great 1176, just a tad cleaner (which is great for vocals and snare, and just about everything) It sits in the mix better than a lot of compressors. The Bluey is a more flexible comp with the wet / dry - but also more like a dirty 1176 (which is great for rock vocals) Even though they are both 1176 designs, they sound very different to my ears.

They are very different units.

Purple is bright and more HiFi and the Bluey is well a LoFi 1176. I’d rather use a Bluey these days if I had to use an 1176. If you want a compromise get a Splice.

The Stam AD[F/G] units are also a good option for multiple 1176 iterations in one unit.

The Wes Audio NG 76 is very impressive.
I think an NG 76 and a Bluey would make a great pair to cover a wide range of uses.
