I have a 76D and the opto comp LA2A. I use the 76D on every session. It's great for taming vocals a little on the way in.

How do you find the opto?

I use the opto on some singers. Usually, it's only on singers that have some control. It sounds great in those cases. I just tend to work with too many singers that are kind of explosive and have limited control over their voice. The 76D help take out the peaks. I have thought of adding the Opto Comp after the 76D for a more finished vocal, but I don't want to paint myself into a corner due to their poor technical ability. Hope that makes sense. I do use the Opto on bass a lot. Bang for buck, it's pretty hard to beat Audio Scape. Also, they are super helpful and responsive. I had a question about the input attenuator on the 76D. They not only sent me info on how to modify the attenuator to fit my needs better, but they sent me another new attenuator. They went above and beyond what I had hoped for. That's in direct contrast to another custom builder who gave me zero help. No regrets getting Audio Scape gear.

I have the Opto, V-Comp, V1290, Golden58. I'm not micirish, but to also add an answer your question: I have not tested it via analyzer app or anything, but I think my Opto has a faster attack/release than some other 2A style compressors I've used in the past or heard samples of, which I think makes it more versatile. Sweet box tone made sweeter with cranked output gain, but it does require a pad on the output. This is the only 2A style compressor I've owned and had time to actually "play" with as opposed to freelance session work where the time crunch allows for less experimentation.

2 V-Comp+, V1290, 2 MEQ-A, XL-305R reverb, D-Comp, D3A, 260VU, 2 classic DI...
I'm in love with the 260VU. They make things sound finished/pop/catchy. So simple and useful. It took me by surprise but it's a sound I was chasing. I'll get another unit at some point.

opto hands down. just adds weight. I like everything I have from them and use most on every session: 76A, 76D, V3A, V108. oddly the only thing of theirs I have and don't use that often is the D comp.

Recently picked up the Golden58 preamp and i’m loving it. I got it secondhand, but physically it looks mint. Overall i love the way it sounds, i’ve been sampling vinyl through it and ran some drum tracks and breaks through it with really nice results. It’s built well, looks good, and sounds even better. Smooth and full, but hifi is how i’d describe it. I do have two things that I’m not completely in love with, but it could just be specific the unit I have since it’s secondhand and I’m not sure if something may have happened to it with the previous owner or during shipping. One is that the channels are not very closely matched. Like, if I have the gain knob on channel 1 at 1 oclock, i’ll have to set the knob on Channel 2 at nearly 1:30 to 2 oclock to match. Not that big of a deal, and I didn’t expect it to be super precise, but again could just bethe unit i have.
Second is the hpf on the Full/Voice switch. I’ve read on their site that it’s 3db at 40hz. To me it seems like it’s rolling off lows at a much higher frequency. I also have a BAE 1073mpf, and when i set its hpf to 80hz, it doesn’t roll off nearly as much lows. It does what I expect an hpf at 80hz to do, just take out the really low rumble. With the Golden58 set to Voice, it feels like so much of the lows/body is being taken out. These two issues aren’t to trash it at all, because it sounds great and is a keeper. I’m not knowledgeable on the inner workings so it’s not anything I could troubleshoot myself. I’m not that nitpicky so these sre things i can live with at the moment. Between the BAE and the Golden58 my preamp thirst has been quenched.

You won’t find many negative experiences with them or their gear, as they are a solid company doing excellent work. Everything they make is well-built and a good value. Don’t buy stuff just because they make it, though. I’ve had a couple things from them that were great, but ended up not being the best choice for my studio. Others I’ve kept and will likely never get rid of.

Nothing to do with the gear at all. Everything to do with me thinking I have to buy EVERYTHING.

How do you find the opto? I have an Opto. It lives on my vocal feed. IMO it's probably the best LA2A out there, worth far more than they ask for it.

I love their Opto - I prefer it to the UA RI.
Great on bass, acoustic and some singers.

I've got one too and would like to start using it with vocals on the way in. Thanks for your advice!

Depending on the vocalist, I'm usually 4:1 or 12:1. Attack is at 10 o'clock and release is fully clockwise, fastest. I set the gain reduction at the loudest parts to around -7dB. Some guys are pretty tough so I also ride the mic preamp gain to try and even out the performance for people who need a lot of help.

If any one is interested I’m selling a V Comp. It’s sounds great, but I only have so much room in my rack and I decided I wanted a stereo vari mu more, so it’s been replaced with a GainLabs stereo comp.
PM me if interested.
