Which one would you choose? I am looking for the most neutral surgical clinical DAC for monitoring... 1. Lynx Hilo 2. Antelope Zodiac+ 3. Benchmark DAC2 HGC

RM Superbeast sounds interesting!! How does it compare to the other DACs? Could you please share your experience with your unit?

Well, have a good read on this thread: realgearonline.com/thread/999My personal experience is still the same that i wrote there. Great gear at silly low price, but you have long lead times. (~3 months). Best regards, Martin

If you are at all interested in Ross Martin order now. His 3 months sometimes is even longer. If you don't like it you can always sell it.

I would go for the HiLo, those units are fantastic in and out and all around. It is one of the most detailed, if not the most detailed AD/DA combo unit we've heard / tested (and we've tested a lot of converters).

Read up on the Dangerous stuff..... I'm really happy with mine, but something about how they talk about their products over there, gives you a feeling that they are really passionate about accurate conversion. I like to read the history of gear manufacturers, theirs is pretty interesting. Mostly i'm a DIY guy all the way with gear these days, but if I am going to buy something off the shelf I want to get to know the company as well as the product, it can give you an idea of their philosophies and that will give you a good idea of what you're likely to experience with their products.

Also have a Dangerous Music source, and the quality is very good. Waiting for my Ross Martin superbeast. Keep to compare it to the Dangerous

Ya know, I missed the "for monitoring" statement in the first post so I do apologize.
The Dangerous stuff would be the way to go!

wow, thank you so much for offering your valuable insights everyone!! I should have mentioned it earlier but I am already using the Source and trying to upgrade. So I guess Hilo wouldn't be much of an upgrade from the source if I am correct? I might as well spend the money on another outboard gear if that is the case

Since I got the RM Super Beast I am on a channel compressor/eq mission and 2 buss processing.

You know, I bought that RM from Scum - the 1794A USB...and I'm wondering if the Superbeast sounds even better? @smallbutfine I don't really wanna wait 4 months though. I bet I could sell this one quick, though, right? tonycamphd

I wrote this somewhere else...but I'll write it again. I go SPDIF from the Apollo into the RM...Then analog out to the power amp/monitors. I then have the option to select either "Ross Martin" or "Apollo" in my sound preferences in OSX. Then, of course I switch to the appropriate interface in Pro Tools. I assume when I'm using the Ross Martin, I'm using the internal clock. When selecting the Apollo, I'm using the Burl clock (I have the Apollo locked via WC). Anyway - while I think it sounds better using the RM, it's not a huge difference switching between the two. That means I'm using the RM converters all the time considering the sound is coming in digitally to the RM and coming out analog.
What I need to do is take the RM out of the chain, plug the outputs of the Apollo back in and remind myself what that sounded like...(even clocked by the Burl) After I do that, I might not be letting that RM go anywhere near a mailbox...

Hi Johnkenn, yes, it really does even more for clarity in the deep mids and bass and adds a better spectral balance. If you have good monitoring, the difference IS worth much more than what you pay for the upgrade. I have yet to find something better...it's what it is, the best chip dac i heard thru the best chip audio opamp in regards to low frequency transport. Trust Jim Williams explanation on what makes this chip combination so extraordinary. It was a post in above linked thread, i think.... The difference is clearly audible - in a very good way. Better stereo field, more analytical low end. Best regards, Martin

Yepp, same here - dammit, if we knew this before, all our 3 RM DACs would have been Superbeasts... ...and i would not be able to report the difference...

The thing is they take so long to get. Just order when you have cash and wait. That is what I did/am doing.

I just realised that Cranesong's Avocet has its own DAC... Maybe I should just get this and call it a day.. if this stuff is good enuff for Bob Katz then it's good enough for me (oh right.. he is using it as a monitor controller.. damn it..)
