I've seen some comments about this VI bass but figured I'd make it easy to find if someone is in the market. This thing is really, really good. It sounds just like bass. What more could you want?
I was looking for a VI bass for placeholder parts (lent my bass to a buddy). Turns out I already had the free version of this. Honestly, not sure why I'd personally need any paid version. I can make this sound exactly like my bass. Dead flat wound strings, picked near the bridge.
In case you don't know, the 60's P-Bass model is free and has all the parameter adjustments.

There’s something about real bass that makes a recording sound professional and classy. I have some really great bass VI’s and I’m very able at playing the lines and I also play a real bass. I use VI’s for demos but for records my bass player Dave comes in with his 5 string Dingwall bass and that’s when a track starts its journey to greatness His bass playing, touch, tone and feel leave all my VI’s sounding like toys!

I've got it too and I agree it sounds good and works well for demos, but nothing beats a real bass being played (by a real bass player).

But you play your parts on keyboard or program ? I play the parts on the keyboard and then I go and clean up the velocity curves afterwards to make it more "guitar like" in performance. One thing I've found that helped (in the all of ONE night that I've been doing this, haha) is playing the part with one finger on the keyboard. Really helps to keep it realistic and more "bass guitar" sounding. And yeah, I totally agree that laying down real bass is usually both better and faster, but I don't know guys. I'm kinda shocked by how "real" what I did last night was. Maybe I'm must fooling myself because I want to not have to re-track it with a real instrument. I'll post later for feedback. Feel free to bring me back to earth if I'm just getting happy ears!

Feel free to bring me back to earth if I'm just getting happy ears! I’ve taken tracks played on a real bass, converted to midi, quantized and tightened, then ran through MODO 2. Works great. Perfect for situations where the performance timing was a bit off, or a couple bad notes, or the recorded tone was sub par. Bunch of scenarios where it’s been very helpful for me.

I just had a fill-in bass player do a bunch of scratch takes for my own band. Frustratingly they are too cool to straight up replace as I intended but not nearly good enough to keep (not even bad in a good way, just a bunch of spots that really don't land). This could be a fun approach to try before just redoing them. None of it was recorded to click but there's a way.

Everybody hates on bass players till they need one. If I could play bass without sounding like a guitar player playing a bass, I could hate on myself too. It would be convenient at least.
