Pulsar W495There doesn't seem to be a thread about this EQ, so I decided to start a little discussion. I was lucky enough to grab it when it was free, but I do believe it's worth owning even if one is paying. This week I've used it on a few vocals, a guitar riff, and in the recent past I've used it on overheads. It isn't overly colorful, like a 1073 or Pultec, but it does seem to have a 'something' compared to something like the PT EQ7 (which I still believe to be a useful tool). Each band can do Mid/Side which it a very useful tool for stereo content. On overheads setting the hi band for side can really open up the whole drumset in a nice way. I didn't think about it this week but I wonder if the M/S would have worked on a Leslie guitar part. I didn't EQ that at all, but I might go into the project just to try. There's an analyzer (which seems all the Pulsar EQs have) that was helpful, even if just confirming that there was a build up in a specific area. In short, I'm really digging this EQ.

I am bummed that I missed out on the freebie. Ah well, it’s not like I’m not swimming in eqs even if this one is a bit different.
Cheers, Geoff

People seem to be all over their 8200 and Massive, but no talk about this one. I should try those.

I just got it for free when I purchased the SSL LMC+ (PluginBoutique) - so that was $17 for both. That was one of the reasons I got them.. installed it and did a real quick test with the EQ but have not really "used it" yet. I definitely plan to though.
I got the Pulsar Smasher awhile back for free too and realized I never loaded it up... so plan to try that one too. And the Softube VCA comp that I got for free today. See the problem here?

It's so hard to NOT grab any free plugin, isn't it?

Its nice. But I found it redundant if you have Pro Q3. You can make any band in that a Mid or Side band. Plus dynamic..ect.
So if you have Pro Q 3, you're not really missing out. This plug doesn't seem to have enough "vibe" in it to be considered a tonal EQ say like SieEQ.
That's my take. Was great as a freebie though.

It's a crunchier take (not a surprise form Soundtoys)

Awesome for midrange boosts. Top end is nice n smooth too, though I wish the freq selection either went a bit lower, or the q was wider enough to grab a bit more into the upper mids.
Bottom end doesn't do it for me; I don't like the shape of the shelf.

Yes I was lucky to get the free deal! It’s not that often a new plugin comes into my ownership and then makes it into my regular use workflow but this one has. As a long time user of MS for all sorts of reasons including recording, mixing and mastering having the MS function on each band is a real nice and useful feature and begs experimentation simply because it’s so accessible.
I agree the sound is on the cleaner side of things but in my world I tend to look to EQ for simple corrective shaping. I tend to look elsewhere for colour.

It doesn’t have enough “grab” in the middle or upper bass, even at its highest freq setting.

I haven't used it on a something where I was boosting low end. I might bess with it on a bass part or organ part today to hear what you're mentioning.

I don't think they are missing anything.

I have way too many as it is. There are so many good ones now for surgery or colour. Wow did I just say that? I love Salt and Camel but that’s just because I haven’t tried all the other Acustica ones I own yet I just can’t resist those bargains. I’ve also a ton of clean ones. I like the Pulse ones though and German hardware.
