You guys tried this plugin comp? I'm starting to sound like an SPL shill...because I thought the De-reverb was better than everything else I tried, and I just ordered the "Big" stereo widener thingy. Anyway - I've been doing the PA Mega trial. The Installation Manager Helper thingy won't work on my Ventura Mac Studio for some reason, so I've just kind've been installing them here and there. Tried the SPL Iron and I think it's going to replace UAD Capital Compressor (so glad I finally just bought it ). Just really thick and elegant with nice attack action. I also think I hear slight sonic differences (like phase differences in a good way) when you select random channels - which is really cool. It also has a stereo widener which ironically could cause me to return the Big that arrives Monday lol. I hope not, though - I'd love to be completely blown away and come in here telling everyone how much better HW is...but that thing sounds pretty fabulous just goosed a little bit. It's also $29 right now.

I’ve always dug the PA SPL Iron. It’s been on many of my tracks. It’s a really nice big-er-izer.

used spl iron a lot on my mixbus. it‘s very hugging with class, always just kissed the needle but you could feel the glue and iron. although i had almost always the same setting because you need the manuel for all the different attack and release settings - too many! to many settings … i never used the sidechain curves ones in a mix. too crazy. those are for correcting in mastering a „wrong“ mix balance i guess.

If I remember right there is also a Joe Carrell SPL IRON Tips & Tricks page on the PA site with a download link in it of some of Joe's SPL presets you can add to your SPL Iron Plugin.

I keep hemming and hawing between this and the Shadow Hills one. I might take the unprecedented step of actually demoing the suckers to see if I prefer one. Or neither.
I’m also sitting on my wallet until leap day. I am getting wise(r) to their sale ways.
Cheers, Geoff

For years, all my PA emails have been going to spam, so if I had known they were going that cheap, I would’ve scooped a bunch of these up way before now.

This thread makes me want to try Iron.

Cheers, Geoff the SHMCA (red lighths) is really good. i use the SPL iron for more mellower/slower tracks and the shadow hills class a for rockier/faster tracks as it can give the snare a nice smack. got the „green“ (lights) shadow hills compressor for free but to me it does not sound as good.

Goes to show how subjective this stuff is. I did not like the red, hot-rodded SHMC, but have always dug the original SHMC, since I got it in UAD land.

So if you’re looking for those features, you have quite a few plugs to choose from. Just thought I’d mention the Chop Shop is $19 at the moment. Less than I paid for it a couple months ago. Sounds good, simple to use. Ok, back to the SPL. Cheers, Geoff
