To replace my 20-year old pair of MDR-7506 cans, which have never really been all that great for getting a good snapshot of what the microphones are giving me. Too bright!
Would love to hear if anyone has made a similar change, they don't need to be totally sealed but not open back I suppose. Preferably under $200.

I’ve been pretty reasonably satisfied with a pair of AT m50s for the last 15 years or so.

Also recommend ATH-M50X as reasonably priced tracking headphones. I am addicted to tracking with my beyerdynamic DT-1770 headphones because I like the way I sound.

Another ATH-M50X vote.. Tried a bunch a decade ago, this one has been the go to since. I know it so well at this point.

Admittedly haven't tried a bunch, but also found the DT770 Pro comfortable with decent isolation. As an admitted amateur, I don't have the room/monitor situation to really make wild claims about accurate translation, but when I got the tracks back home and listened on my K702s, there weren't any surprises, which is what I'm looking for in tracking cans. Struggled a bit when tracking bass in terms of isolation, ended up having to play back to check what was being captured, rather than just doing it on the fly. (But so many people go DI on bass, that might not be a big deal.) I'd be curious to try the DT770M version some day.

I never liked the MD-7506 as much either. Then again I did replace the ear pads with Beyerdynamic velour ear pads and I think that made the low end less present (meaning way too much high end now). And when it was low humidity, dragging the coiled cable would build up static electricity, which was then transferred to the metal plates in the ear cups and ZAP!!! me every time (this happened before the ear pad change too - in fact I think it was worse before). I have not had that problem with any other phones.
Now I have ATH-M40x and ATH-M30x for the "band". The M40's tend to have a bit more bass response so I usually give that to the bass player, but I also just found that the earpads were pealing and leaving black crap all over everyone's ears, so I got some velour replacements (Amazon). Have to see how they hold up - so far I think the low end is about the same. I have the DT-770 Pro's (250) that I use (while a band is tracking, since we are all in the same room) or as another opinion when mixing.

For tracking I use extreme isolation ex29. Great behind drums and anywhere in a one room studio where you don’t want leakage in either direction. For mixing akg702. The EX29 is not the best sounding hp but serves the tracking purpose. this is the company www.directsoundproaudio.com

Yeah I have the same situation. Off the hip they are not the best to tweak in the sound with, but you will learn them in the way that it works. They are darker and has a low boost, but no high end boost. They don’t fatigue your ears. You can play them loud which helps with drum tracking. I usually set the amp, and with phones on search the mic position, take a test track and if I need to make adjustments I do, but nowadays it kind of is routined. I have used these hp for a decade at least. They really are a life saver in the one roomer. Nice to track loud sources.

My EX29's sound like shit, but they are older so maybe that changed? Lack of low end and just blah everything else. I used to use them for drum tracking but then the cord finally went out on one side (which I fixed later) and in the meantime I started using something else. If you are going for isolation and good sound, just look into a pair of good IEMs. They can plug in to any headphone jack (just like any other set of headphones) and will give you much better isolation and much better sound (IMO) than the EX29s.

I tried my first set of DT770 a year ago and I bought 3 pairs to replace all the headsets in the studio.
Also, Audio technica were fine headphones but the damn earpads kept rotting and I'd have to change them out every year and I could never find a decent set of non-brand earpads for cheap.

I mean the best closed-back on earth would probably be the new Dan Clark Audio E3, but that's 2,5K... So probably not what you're looking for. I'm obsessed with these E3 headphones. I'll try them soon. Next week probably, along with the Stealth, Expanse, AA Composer, Heddphone 2. Can't wait.
The DT770 can't be beaten IME. And cheap ! The best workhorses In my opinion. I can't mix without them. It's been 15 years... The 880 would love to sound like the 770, but they don't hehe. No balls.

Sorry, yet another vote for ATH M50X. Ear pads aside, they have a nice rounded sound, and although they tend to over-enhance the bass a little, they have a rounded "listen all day" sound that reproduces the whole mix. The rest can be EQ'd flat enough.
If you want something that will last forever, and still have parts available when forever comes, Beyerdynamic DT-100. But you can ONLY use them for tracking, and the bass player probably can't use them for tracking because he won't be able to hear much of what he's playing. As mid-focused tracking workhorses, that are not in the slightest accurate, they have a place in life. I'm minded to try the DT-150, as it seems like the same thing, but will need the bass removing, which is possible, rather than adding back in, which really isn't.
My next pair might well be Slate Audio VSX. A little over budget, but it does seem from reports that they do most things pretty well. Haven't read up on anyone using them for tracking.

How about under $40? Normally around $30 when on sale/GC... Tascam TH-200X. Might end up as just a back up pair (compared to the Usual Suspects already mentioned here) but good bang for the buck. Fortunately my "mellower 7506's" (MDR-V6) are still in excellent condition. Unfortunately out of Production. Chris

Bought 2 pairs of the Beyer DT 770 - the 250 OHM version about 1.5 years ago. very happy with them for performer and also in the control room for critical listening when there too much talking going on around me. At the opposite end of the workflow they have also translated well for binaural atmos music mixies and don’t sound like a different universe to the airpod pro 2’s also used for referencing atmos with as well. I find them comfortable as well.
