Anyone else digging this? I bought one used locally over a year ago and now that we're back up and running, put it on bass today. Does what it's supposed to do. Sounds better than the UA reissue that I have.

I have the SA-23A+ and the 3A is what I’m using most of the time. I dig 3As in general and dig the Stam.

I have a pair. Stock, the 50dB gain setting is not right; not nearly enough gain. Can be corrected with a single resistor change at the input. I had an original for 15-years that I tracked vocals with 90% of the time. It was my game-changer. With these SA3As, I didn’t miss my original for a while. However, I’m now thinking the gain-structure still isn’t right. I use to be able to track vocals with only a few dB of gain from a preamp (or anything line-level from a console insert) and set the LA3A at 50dB gain, limiter, and 5-6 & 5-6 knob settings, almost always. Doesn’t seem like that’s where I’m landing at all anymore and the sound is great only half the time; though never-ever bad. The original was great absolutely all the time. Something’s up and I don’t know what it is.

I’m just not sure if that’s the right action to take. They’re working, and besides the single resistor change, exactly the way they expect. Josh is aware of the resistor change and asked me about it, but the guy that did it for me was previously a US repairer for him and wasn’t in a sharing-mood with Josh. He had taken over from another guy I know who was one of the first US repairers for Josh.
I’d definitely be down to send them to someone who can truly get the SA3As rocking as close as possible to originals, but I don’t know who that would be. If nothing else, should I not be able to find someone, at some point, I may just take the original schematic and the units to my ultimate and appreciately-expensive repair-shop friend just down the road from me. I just have to be ready to sink all kinds of money into it, just in case, as he’s an all-in kind of audio-guy when it comes to his time and ultra-high audio expectations; when it comes to things that aren’t just repairs.

Do send it over, we will be happy to have a look at it. Please DM me and we will sort out whatever is wrong with it. Is it a rack 3A or 500 series? I have no idea who you are referring to in all honesty or why someone wouldn't share what they did on the unit, it's been so long with Jeff that I don't even remember who used to do repairs back then.

That's interesting info recordingengineer. Please report back on any progress getting that thing going like you want it. I've been super tempted to pick up an original, but unobtainium resistance has held me back.

I'd be interested in knowing what the mod is about for I have three 500 modules that could benefit from it.

i have the 500 series and enjoy it. not my first call for a lot of things, but does many jobs well and sounds good. i appreciate having the multiple options. I usually use the mod switch as stock is a bit noisy.
