It's frustrating. This thing cost like $300 and is constantly whipping the pants off of my other mics that I paid many times that much for. Good problem I guess! It's just so transparent that it picks up the flavor of the signal chain perfectly.
Shameless self promotion again but here's a video I just posted using only the 441 in Fig 8 for vocal and acoustic. Maybe not everyone's taste (I've really got the preamps grinding... RND 5032 into SB MK1) but it's exactly what I wanted it to sound like. The voice over part sounds 100% like what was in my head.
I wanted it to sound like Paul Harvey or Casey Kasem. But specifically what they sounded like listening to them on the radio in the car with my dad.

I just went back and listened to my mic tests on this from last night and my U48 clone sounds great but it doesn't sound like "API preamp" in the way that the 441 does. The 441 is like a cucumber, it has no flavor of its own but it can absorb the flavor of anything you soak it in.

Real talk, have you compared the 441 to the 640? I liked the 640 when I've used it, and was sort of guessing the LCT 441 is essentially a similar mic but designed without a transformer... Upon further inspection though, it looks like it has more patterns than the 640 too, so maybe they're significantly different...

I have the 840 (multi tube) and it's much richer than the 441. But still more transparent than my U48 replica. I've wanted the 640 for a long time. I do so much recording where I am tracking my own band that I think I would actually make great use of the ability to switch polar patterns after the fact. My impression is that the 441 is the same as the 440 but with multiple patterns. And the 640 is the same as the 441 except dual output and the ability to change patterns later. Never actually heard the 440 but if it's what I assume which is just the 441 in cardioid that has got to be the bargain of the century. These mics literally do nothing to the sound. There's no other way to say it. They just sound like whatever was happening in the room and whatever you run it through.

Glad it's working so well for you. My voice is so bright though...
The 840 and the 940 (tube setting) were excellent.
But the non-tube models wouldn't be candidates, as a first pull vocal mic. Chris

Alan Parsons wrote about the 940... As a well regarded vocal mic too. (the 940 specifically-partly due to tonal flexibility). Chris

Who makes Lewitt’s capsules?

Unless it's changed since... Supposedly, they have their own factory in China. Whether that means they "own it" outright, or they commission their designs (Ala 797 etc.), not really sure. IMHO largely good (or better) QC level is a prime factor. Chris

Why do I want these when I have so many mics already?

Funny, this mic keeps popping up on my radar. Think I first saw it on a recording podcast I like called Progressions sounds great

I must admit despite how great they looked on paper Lewitt mic's never really won me over until the LCT 1040. Of course it's the most expensive mic they do but hey, you know me by now. Anyway, the application significance of this mic is nothing to be sniffed at IMO. One of the major components in getting a wide sound is variation, for the best sound possible that usually means a lot of expensive mic's on seperate instruments. However the 1040 can do it all, in warm mode it sounds very much like a U67 to me and I love the 67 on acoustics, it's great for taming string, fret noises etc. and there's this really balanced smooth sound. For the music I'd look to achieve however I always found that the 67 was lacking a bit of articulation on vox, with the 1040 that ain't an issue just simply dial in some more FET. Want some wide sounding acoustics? Record one in warm mode, record another with saturation and a bit of FET. Backing vox? Same principle but clear (tube) mode and warm, I mean the sonic shaping capabilities behind a good amp / compressor is incredible. It's far better than using some hacky plugin workaround to achieve the same effect, IME get it right at the source. A while back ago I was looking for a flagship vocal mic but I'd probably sell one of the 67's and have the 1040 as my do it all flagship. That's if I was going to get into this stuff again ..

Love my Lewitts. It's a shame they just don't seem to be getting the press their quality deserves.

But why oh why does such a great performing mic have to look like the bonnet ornament of a monster truck at monster jam??? I am 100% sure I would already have picked up one if it would be something I would like to stare at while tracking…. but with all the great reviews I just might have to pick one up at some stage anyway.

My first post about the 441 include the phrase "not as ugly as you'd think." haha. I was the same way and honestly, they don't look as bad in person as they do in the marketing photos. You can probably see in the screenshot of that video. i got over and now I'm kind of a Lewitt stan to be honest. I own four of their mics now.

Obviously, these things are in the eye of the beholder, so nothing wrong with their design, but I personally don’t like the aesthetic. I imagine I would like the sound, though.

I always said they looked like they were made by Alienware for gamers. You're even closer though... it's straight up Gen 1 X-Box. I'm telling you though, the green isn't as pronounced in person!!
