Anyone have any experience with these? I have an AEA R84A and also a Alder H44 ribbon. I was thinking about either getting a second of one of those I listed or maybe get a Stager stereo ribbon. It's sole purpose is as a room mic for drums. In my space, I can get it about 12-14' in front of the kit. I currently setup a couple condensers but I have not been happy with the imaging when used as spaced pairs.
Also open to other stereo mic ideas but I need to stay under $1500.

Two Beyer M160s in ORTF. For me, a reliably excellent sound.

There are some youtube video links in the right hand sidebar on this page showing the NoHype SRM-1 in action. It costs a little under €500. nohypeaudio.com/nhaproducts.htmAnd here's a quick shootout vs 4038 and m160:

I second this, I have a MK1 v44s and it's awesome. Always wanted to try the SR2N but haven't recorded drums in a few years so haven't tried it yet.

The V44S was not on my radar at all... till now. I may actually get more use out of a stereo condenser than a stereo ribbon. I don't have any experience with Vanguard Audio mics. How would you describe the character? I'm not looking for anything super open and bright. Mostly a balanced sound would do good and I could even use it on piano as well.

I just recently recorded a classical guitarist using the V44s. Focusrite Red 6 preamps. No EQ, no Compression. XY stereo 100º. Lots of room...and my main room is fairly big. Portugese.V44s_Sample.mp3 (873.09 KB)

P.S. The microphone was about 6 feet back from the guitar.
Let me see if I can quickly pull up another sample, since I'm editing drums this morning and I use the V44s for room mic for drums as well.

I'm quite interested in hearing drum samples Done. Very heavy hitter as you can tell. Drums are a 24" Sonor kick, 14x6.5 Supraphonic, all cymbals and hats are Zildjian Dark Ks Only mic used here is the V44s, positioned about 10 feet in front of the kit at (too close to and what is wrong with me?) cymbal height. Loved it. Lots of detail, but not too much. Nice tone.

Can’t get the audio link to work It'a an attachment. If you're on a Mac, hold down the option/alt key and click on the link and it should DL automatically and pop up on your Apple Music app.

Well, at this point I went on a slightly different route. I got a second Alder Audio H44 (so I have a pair) AND a Vanguard V44S. That ought to keep my microphone purchases happy for a bit.

I've never used the stereo version but i have the regular SR2n..nice mic, definitely a ribbon with the top end a bit forward -some say creamy sounding..im not one who says that but i might some day. It's got a nice sound character..low end on this mic is great if you need it, if you don't it's easily controllable ..All in all it's a keeper. Very useful for electric guitar..and nice for a Telecaster sound..getting a pretty sweet crisp high that doesn't make the fillings in your teeth disintegrate..Cool and very nicely made mic..
