Whatever happened to the promise of digital consoles? Consoles that could take 48 or more digital AESEBU inputs? Process, pan, assign and level in each channel, buss to digital busses, spit out a complete digital output to a master deck or back into PT/DAW and never leave the digital world??
When Digidesign/Avid went the HUI route and then bought out Euphonix... did everyone just give up on it?
What's out there?

You can find them in broadcast stations and mobiles. They mostly have MADI I/O.
For "cheaper" solutions look into live boards. That little Yamaha QL5 with its 32 mic-pre, 64 channels Dante I/O, optional 32 ADAT or AES I/O, 24 mix busses is very tempting for 16K.

Probably one of those situations where people who want a console already work on an analog console, and those who stay in the box won't shell out the extra money for a fancy digital console when a mouse works 99% the same.
I suppose it's just up to how folks work. Once you've locked into a certain way, you aren't going to change unless you have to, especially when huge money is involved.

For most in recording a digital console is redundant with the DAW, as mentioned they dominate Film, live and broadcast . The Euphonix system 5 DSP wis an interesting cross between a Control surface and a console. Since digital is software based, a hardware based console is almost obsolete the day after delivery. If you are in a Uhber high track count situation though a big Harrison is hard to beat!

I just wish console designers were more creative. Way too many are SSL posers when no analog audio is involved in the wiring layout. The point of a console for literally a century has been not needing to be distracted by looking at the damned thing.
