I ordered the new pair of transformerless SDCs (011s). Probably going to keep them as left/right overheads so I can use my 013s elsewhere.
It's funny. The Bomblet is the only mic they make that I didn't connect with.
Bomblets are a bit darker and mellow, reminds me a lot of a processed ribbon mic at times. Right up my alley, but I understand why a lot of people don’t like them as much. It’s been hard for me to use anything else on acoustic instruments the last year or so when I’m going for a warm, colored folky sound. This is a very apt description. The way they handle transients is very ribbon-esque, IMO. I think its one of the best workhorse mics out there. It's versatile without sounding boring. Fantastic on drum overheads, rooms, kick out, toms, woodwinds and acoustic guitar. The only thing I find it to be "meh" on is lead vocals, but that is what the 017 FET is for!

They're not bad on vocals, but not my favorite choice by any means. I havn't had the chance to try them on a harsher sounding female vocalist, they might do well there.

I preferred my Bomblet over the 17 fet as well. other then thinking the Bomblet was way overpriced for what it was (as well as the 17fet , it was a nice enough mic. But alas all my Soyuz's collection is gone and I wont be coming back to them. Why?

I’ve had the new ambisonic mic here for a while, as well as a pair of 011’s. Here’s a shorter comparison video so you can get an idea of how the 011 and 013 compare. Very different and complimentary small caps.

011 sounds more balanced on the acoustic..... 013 sounds a bit tubby although I do like the slight compression it has, which I assume is due to the transformer. Ambisonic just made me dizzy with headphones.
011 gets my vote on piano as well.

It’s funny, the 013 really isn’t a “tubby” mic, but you definitely hear it that way when it’s directly contrasted with the 011 since they’re so different. I used the 013 on some acoustic guitars the next day after doing that video, and it sounded really open and natural to me again (my brain had some time to reset I guess). As different as they sounded on guitar, they were pretty close to each other on my piano. I’ve experienced this before on mic shootouts with that piano, so I think it’s more the piano than anything. Regardless of what mic you use, I can always see and hear a pretty steep roll off on the highs starting around the 4k-6k region, it’s just not a bright piano. I think the results would have been much different on a Yamaha C7 or something. I thought about mic’ing up my little tiny upright piano (it’s pretty bright), but just didn’t have time. I had someone reschedule a session last minute and had half a day to record and shoot the video, I crammed in what I could…

My biggest takeaway was that a little room mic on your piano really makes it sound great.

My biggest takeaway was that a little room mic on your piano really makes it sound great. I've experimented a lot with room mics on my piano in this room and was just not a fan. It's already a brighter, more open sounding room and for whatever reason the room was bringing out too many of those annoying overtones in that piano (I talked about that in the video a little bit). The first day I got the ambisonic mic here, I spent most of the day just moving it around the room on the piano and playing around with distances. I kept coming back to that position right above my head, and not surprisingly I'm having the reoccurring realization that the ambisonic mic usually sounds the best in the spot where something sounds the best to your ears in the room. Adding a bit of that ambisonic mic on the close mics for the piano was great, and it's really the only time I've been happy mixing close mics and rooms on that piano in here. I've settled on just moving the close mics a little further up or back on the piano if I felt like it needed more room, but I'll probably be doing the ambisonic/011 combo for a while now.
