i am no bassist. i am a songwriter and guitarist who ocasionally plays bass, keys and drums. i‘d like to add a semiacoustic bass to my studio arsenal. how well do they record and sit in a rock mix? i know the usual contenders are … mostly fender precision bass. i see and hear very little semiacoustic bass. i am inteigued by one because i saw the bassplayer in black rebel motorcycle using and abusing a epiphone rivoli. he uses sonetimes heavy fuzz and it cuts trough the mix. granted, there‘s just a drummer and one guitarist so not much density in the band. whats your experience? i do own a violin hofner copy (i know also semihollow but different) which is my retro bass sound with flatwounds on. it will stay like that, with the muted beatles PLUMP tone. rhe new bass would be used for more modern gnarlier sounds.

I’ve got an Epiphone Jack Cassidy hollow bass that plays and records nicely. Sounds great and has a fair amount of tonal variation with the pickup “impedance switch”
BUT
99% of the time I use my P Bass. It sounds right and it feels right.

The argument is: A P-bass only has one sound. The counter argument is: A P-bass is the right sound 99% of the time.

Let us know how it works out It's the same as the Eastwood Classic 4 bass guitar which is supposed to be a copy of a Gretsch Electromatic semi hollow bass guitar ... should arrive this week. Just googled the Guild Starfire bass, looks nice, didn't see it before. Hope the Harley Benton offers good enough tone for recording, I'd use it just to sketch out some baselines during songwriting. And – hopefully – it will be playable with not too high of an action! I will keep my Höfner violin copy with flat wounds on for the good old Beatles/Motown/60's sounds and this new Harley Benton bass is planned to offer a second, more rockier sound.
