Big yes.. love them.I have 2 The yellow sunset ones Pretty much what everyone else is saying
Hi Hunter, something I've always wondered but haven't found anyone explaining.. How do the Sound Techniques compare soundwise to the Trident A-Ranges you used to have?
Since a large part of the reason people seem to gravitate to the Trident is actually the ST sound from those 60-70s records.. I was wondering if their sonics somewhat overlap or how they differ..
Thanks in advance!

If somebody other than roundbadge has experience with both, that would also be welcome!
Finding someone that has used both might be a bit like finding an needle in a needlestack, two relatively rare circuits, but here's hoping..

Different.the Tridents were more aggressive, brighter overall. the ST smoother more musical. Layout overall and eq make more sense to me.the trident build quality was erratic sorta flimsy.hated using the dumb unreliable flaky Trident eq faders and they're unobtainium now anyways. much prefer ST and so glad Danny brought them back

Thanks so much Hunter! That's really interesting to hear, that the Tridents are brighter since the ST's are the brightest pre's in my stable.. Or at least the most extended up top I should say. Stays warm up top though. Like everything has a halo up there..

They are different consoles that share a similar name.

Yes, exactly! Hence the question which pertained to "how"' they are different sonically.

I had one of those Purple Trident MTA A Range 2 x channel strips for a short time before I sent back due to it being faulty. I total understand Roundbages opinion of the black EQ faders, although the problem with this unit was not related to that. But I totally feel in love with the sound of the unit. Those EQ's are broad and the preamp's have there own sound going on. The other Trident units S80, 4T, 80B, ATC2 and the others do not sound similar to the purple unit. If this Sound Techniques unit has the same mojo as the Purple Trident A Range, then it is seriously worth considering. I still have my eye out for another Priple Trident Strip so somewhere down the road there will be another one in my collection of seemingly rarely used equipment at my place.

The studio I work out of has the current Trident Audio Developments 2-Ch. A-Range Pre/EQ. The sound is still just as great as ever. The preamp alone is very neutral and smooth; great for already-bright mics. Leave the EQ flat, but put it in the circuit, and it instantly becomes super open and airy. Don’t know if that’s how the original A-Range consoles were, but it’s definitely cool! Actually use the EQ to broadly-shape or add more of what is not enough, is amazing. The HPFs buttons make a low-frequency pop when you engage them. No thing to me at all, but I do wonder if that is how it was on original A-Range consoles, a current design-flaw, or outright not expected by the manufacturer. Maybe I’ll ask them. Honestly though, I’m not sure it’s bothersome-enough for me to care.

They're the same.. I had both the sunset sound one and a more recent one.. opened them both up. The pcb lay out may have been a bit different, don't remember, but the insides seemed the same. Sound is also the same.. that probably matters quite a bit
Thanks, good to hear it. It would be a bit strange if they were different beyond the face plate. As one of the designers behind the ZR6064CS rack units, I can reassure you that the various product releases are essentially the same. There have been variations of the front panel in regard to colours and finishes. The schematics are identical, however, over the years that the product has been in production, there have been minor changes to the PCB layouts to account for improving manufacturability and/or accounting for component availability. The sound and technical performance is consistent through the various manufacturing runs of the unit.

They live on the stereo bus and measure up to my expectation. I particularly enjoy the EQ section- the blend of stepped and continuous controls is unique but instantly easy to understand and use. Congratulations to you, Danny and all who were involved in the design work.
