Anyone using this? I was thinking about buying some captures by amalgam. Do I need the paid version (ToneX Max) to import these, or can I use the free CS version? I know there’s a limit on the number you can download with the free version. But does that limit apply to imports as well?

Yes. I think with the free one you just get 10 free profile slots…and last I checked, you can’t delete and replace them. So if you do that, be careful what you download. I just bought the $99 (or around there) one and it’s unlimited slots.
As for the sounds - it’s definitely a step up from the algo versions. I still think there’s a sameness to the profiles similar to the Kemper…I prefer the AxeFX…but it does sound pretty damn good.

Also, I'm assuming it's per profile and not per amp. I think the amalgam stuff comes with 20ish presets per amp. I don't know if I want to spend that much. I was looking for a couple of different flavors for scratch tracking ITB, but I can just use what I've got...which is kind of my new goal for this year. I tried one of his free ones, the Swart AST clean, just because I have a Swart AST and wanted to hear how it compares to my current silent tracking setup, amp -> Suhr RL IR. Granted, different cab IR's, but the amalgam Swart is brighter and cleaner. One thing I noticed is that with my Swart amp, I can play clean and dig in for a little hair. I love that. With the amalgam ToneX, it stays clean no matter what. It's like, one tone...clean.

You can try Neural Amp Modeler if you don’t want to buy the full ToneX. It’s a free amp capture-type plug-in that Amalgam also offers packs for. I bought his Copper amp, the Carr Mercury, and the Benson packs during one of his sales. www.neuralampmodeler.com/userswww.amalgamcaptures.com/nam?page=2I started playing with Neural Amp Modeler a few months ago because I didn’t want to keep buying more stuff.

Amalgam and everyone else puts up freebies for every set…and there have been several where I didn’t bother to buy the set because the sample was great.

The axe does this the best, but even it’s not like a real amp that can go from clean to super dirty with just picking dynamics.

How about the Neural Tone King and Morgan Amps? To me, those are two of the most realistic sounding plugs.

I bought the Tonex pedal. It comes with Tonex max software as well as amplitude 5 which I already had. With Tonex max you can download as many rigs as you want. I have found some really good ones from the studio rats and many more. I like the pedal as well. It is small enough and great as a portable rig if I don't want to bring my bigger modeling boards. Especially for traveling. The pedal, a set of phones and my laptop I have a great portable recording rig.
I am also a big fan of the Neural DSP Tone King. I have not tried the Morgan models. The Rabea and Plini or good as well. The Fortin Cali is a great one as well. Sonicdna has some great ir's for cheap. I own ir's from several companies and I always go back to his.

Tonex has a $50 crossgrade from Amplitube going on til the end of the month. I had said that I was going to get it the next time they had it on sale at that price because I originally liked what I was hearing from the free version and I wanted to have the unlimited tone model downloads. But…when I went back yesterday to try it again before buying, it wasn’t doing it for me. (Usual disclaimer: I am not a guitar player. I’m a keyboardist who plays just enough guitar to handle basic guitar parts for my own recordings.)
I was getting that thing I’ve heard other people talk about where the cleans sounded like a DI, and the crunchier tones sounded static. Input levels didn’t have the same effect on tonal changes as you get from Amplitube, especially when I was going for a particular jangle sound that I like. I still have a week to think about it, but I’m strongly leaning towards holding onto the $50 and just sticking with AT.
