I think tape plugins are a joke and there are better ways to get saturation and color.

It sucks and sounds like an ir. U-he Satin, the free Chow Tape that models some old Sony 2 track, Goodhertz Tupe and Wow-Ctrl, Kramer Tape from the tube Ampex, Fuse TCS-68 for the Tascam, Softube tape where it just sounds like saturation, IK Tape that softens everything and usually sounds like it is broken are all better and you probably already own a few of them. Some of these are dynamic linear phase convolutions that are all kinds of fucked up, sound mangling devices like the IK Tape and IK Tascams (unintentional) and the Abherrant DSP Sketch Cassette (it in no way sounds like a half decent cassette deck but it is cool) but they sure sound better and cooler than the "Irish tape deck" convolution plugin. Kramer Tape and Goodhertz Tupe sound dope on guitars even if they don't like any tape deck I've ever used.

I’ve really only used UA ampex 102 in the 2 bus but can’t now as it’s not native. I have studer and like it but find a very little goes along way for me!

Please, tell us what you really think ! Now these days, I'm thinking there are a lot of plugs that do a lot of the same thing. Klanghelm’s SDRR would be something that could do these sounds and more. Their free plugins are not bad either. |
