As it gets closer to tax time, I usually tally up some totals and compare to previous years. I'm sure many of you did a heck of a lot more, but 2023 was pretty good overall for me (especially the session drumming side). Here's a few highlights of mine - but I want to see what y'all did too?
drum tracks: 112 - 69 were online/remote (via my own website or Soundbetter), and the rest were for local clients or my own bands.
albums, singles, or demos recorded/completed/released: 8
other clients (still WIP): 3
I also played 63 live shows (paid gigs) around my local area. So yeah, it felt pretty busy again.

Quiet year onstage as we crawl towards a partial Post-Pandemic recovery. So... Only around 50 singing performances. But almost all of them were with an amazing Jazz Trio. With Tony Guerrero/Trumpet soloing with me twice! Whereas 2015 to 2020 was over 4,000 Songs!! Didn't know "what I had". Two recordings with Kenny Bronowski.* The gifted... Singer/Songwriter/Multi-Instrumentalist/Producer/AE. Whew! On the second one we also had Danny Artuso, the incredible Steel Pedal player, on it. Scores of "practice recordings" to try to up my Spoken (started in earnest last month) and Singing chops. As a result usually by the evening, you can really hear the true upper High Tenor voice finally developing. Chris *First recording a Dylan Cover of "Only A Hobo". Rod Stewart does a fantastic one! Second was a Cover of "Goodtime Charlie"/Danny O'Keefe. Top 10 Hit in 1973. Great classic song.

When mine does-onstage... They usually laugh! Thanks Danny. Although the hopefully significant $$ (realistically) is going to NOT be mainly singing...* It's good for personal morale. More $$ likelihood with Animation VO/Dialects/etc. *Unless I do those darn Chipmunk vocals. And I don't need any "speeding up"! They're Au Natural. Chris P.S. First time singing "One For My Baby"/Sinatra tonight. Am nervous! Partly as someone listening may be hiring me as a...(get this) Wedding Singer!! Might be good grounds for-well never mind.

I'm terrible at doing this. I know a few things were finished and released (one released on Jan 1). Several little 1-3 song projects. A few EPs from soup to nuts. A few clients tracked with me and mixed on their own. A couple where I tracked basics and the rest was finished elsewhere. One record by a band that I am a member of is started... Another song by the band I've been in forever that only works when the guitar player comes to town. I can't remember if the audiobook was last January or not. Taught 2 students a semester of Intro to recording. Another project with a music business class, which lead to 2 other projects.
A little reviewing for Tape Op, a conference in St Louis.
Basically, somehow, keeping the joint open.

Work with 20 different music clients on roughly 25 projects, a couple of those were singles but most were at least 6-7 songs. 11-12 releases in 2023, one single was started and abandoned in 2004 before coming back from the dead. Several were live or remote recordings. 2 projects originating in other studios due to space needs, classical guitar orchestra in one case. 16 livestream mixes of a music variety show, those mixes later chopped and formatted for radio syndication. Put bass on about a dozen songs for one client.

2 - eps produced recorded mixed 1 - musical produced recorded mixed Bunch of singles
Finished writing my ep possibly full record depending on how many I hate after I produce them
Tons of playing on other people’s records. Lots of bass, pedal steel, some drums, hardly any guitar surprisingly.
Slow year musically but I sort of transitioned away from taking every possible junk project to pay the bills to working on my house and studio. WAY happier working this way. Charging more for things that matter and passing up the smaller things that used to give me nothing but aggravation and grief.

1 album mixed that sold a fair amount. followup partially started but will be finished when christ comes back. a ton of drum recordings cleaned up and rough / sub mixed for various clients and projects. a bunch mastered that didn't sell where I have no idea what the client did with the DDP and do not even usually know the band names or song titles if they do not need a DDP with CD-Text. two live shows (rehearsals?) edited and mastered that didn't sell but banged. One is not out yet but really bangs. recording the finish touches on a metal album where the lead guitarist finally came through. it's coming back from the dead. mixing another metal album now.

I am small, small, potatoes for sure. My recording project released only one song the whole year due to things beyond my control. The target had been to release about once a month. We have the material and I have a lot of the basic tracks done especially drums thanks to drumsound . The plus side of the recording project stagnating is that it motivated me to start pulling together solo arraignments of all of these songs and stick my neck out as a solo performer. Just me and a guitar is a lot more daunting than me “hiding” in a band and I am pleased that I have played out at least 40 times when my goal was twenty. I have actually started to gain a little traction out and about and hope to continue down this path in the upcoming year. I appreciate everyone here for encouraging me in my various endeavors (both publicly and in PMs) and I sincerely hope everyone has a happy and energetic 2024.
