Hi All -
Happy New Years Eve !
As a simple tracking eq I am considering the Pope Bax 2020 or QXP 535A. Both less than $400. I have never hears of QXP, so wondering about thier reputation. Would anyone with experience with either share their thoughts on either of these ?
Thanks
Craig

Baxandall EQ’s are pretty simple and honestly probably work more often than they should. A Quick Look and both of these are pretty similar. I’m not personally a huge fan, but I do like the Purple lil Peq’er more color. Most fixed freq EQ’s leave me disappointed, I want more control of where that boost and cut is, I also have to admit I have to some control in the mids.

I do use a Heritage HA81A EQ that provides a fair amount of control over frequency points and Q. Not a baxandall, but the Hacienda Labs EQ169 (link below) is also on my radar. Given the sweepable mid band, it has a fair amount of flexibility for a simple EQ. Seems it could be a solid tracking solution. HL EQ169 Link

FWIW I am selling a nice little 8 channel Alice console that has Baxandall high and low bands and a sweepable midrange. Ted Fletcher the designer was friends with Peter Baxandall and was a big reason they become popular back in the day. It's hard to beat getting 8 multi band baxandall EQs for the price, let alone having 8 transformer balanced preamps, and a master out section with diode limiter. Anyways, it's in the classifieds if you're interested.

Interesting, the Studer it’s based on has a bit of a cult following. I think a big question to ask yourself is are you looking for a tone machine or a clean problem solver.

Looking for a clean problem solver... i'm familiar with Studer, but by name only, is Studer generally colored / vibish ? That era more towards clean, I think if I were you I would save for a used Speck 500 series EQ, a bit of tone but an excellent problem solver. I know the itch to get something now, but a bit more savings will get you into something you will probably never want to upgrade. The other that I have seen a few go for less than $650 used is Tim Campbell’s favorite TC EQ!

What is the problem you are trying to solve? Surgical EQ? I guess I’ve never thought of Baxandalls as surgical.
