Is it just me or does it seem to you too that used prices have climbed significantly over the last few years?
Most of what I see here in Canada, is like 20-30% higher than seems reasonable to me?

Most of what I see here in Canada, is like 20-30% higher than seems reasonable to me? some of that may be shipping costs - which have gone crazy and sometimes make shipping an item not even worth it. but also retail prices have gone up. Some of that is also due to shipping costs which are built-in to all of the sellers that offer "free" shipping, since it is not really free... and of course manufacturing and labor costs are going up too because, well, everything is going up. So if you compare a used item to the new price, it will follow. |

I understand, but I was talking about asking prices on typically used sites not retail.
On my local Kijiji site, the only low prices are gear with obvious problems, everything else, to me, seems way overpriced
Sign of the times , I guess.

I've been paying more attention to guitars than pro-audio gear but both things tend to follow the same curve. A lot of people paid crazy prices during the pandemic and now want/need to sell so they are asking a lot. But, asking prices are meaningless. Looking at what things are selling for (using ebay and reverb as resources), it's kinda spooky how quick the value on some high-end items is dropping. Not only that but the gear isn't moving. It's scarry to watch this happen while inflation is taking place.

I think you're suffering from short term memory loss lol Compared to a year ago, stuff has come down. People aren't buying as much and all the Covid splurgers are trying to move gear they never use and over paid for. I've seen nothing but prices drop this year on most things I keep any eye one. Still much higher than pre 2020 era but still they have dipped. People don't have the cash on hand that they did with inflation going on. I'd bet they keep coming down on most things over the next few months.

The answer here is completely based on what your looking at, U87s, SM7s, Sta levels, well yes used prices of the most popular gear has gone up significantly. This has been fueled by Internet forums, EBay, Reverb GC used pages etc. The counterpoint to this is if you look at less popular SKUs your still going to find a lot of bargains.
As someone who is out there hunting for bargains everyday on both the popular and a fair amount of more obscure sources if your patient in hunting, but move quickly when you discoverer a deal you can do very well, but if your just looking for the same stuff as everyone else in the same places, yeah it’s not going to be cheap.

Inflation, Reverb Fees, supply chain issues, shipping costs, IRS coming after every penny sent through cash apps…none of it makes for a good market place Shipping fees I see are crazy on reverb. I don't remember the USPS being that expensive. Shipping gear has become painfully expensive for folks who aren't getting volume discounts. It's made gear repairs pricey and sometimes not even viable. I feel terrible for people who don't have a decent tech in their area. In fact, I know many who have dead gear just sitting in their studio because the cost of shipping both ways to get it repaired is prohibitive on some items. I remember shipping guitars about 5 years ago for $75, and that was annoying because it had been $50 in 2015. Now, I'm looking at $175+ for an acoustic. I got a UPS 3-day quote of $360 last week. USPS might be a little cheaper but they scare me on high dollar items. They once lost a $6,000 instrument, only to find it was sitting in the local station for a week and everyone just ignored it (the driver who found it suspected the workers just didn't want to carry the heavy box). |

If I remember correctly this year (2023) started with a whole new round of additional taxes on petroleum products, oil refining and non “green” energy production in general. I forget the details, but I’m fairly sure that increase in both production costs and shipping has trickled down to every level of our economy. |

Well I'm going to look into setting up an UPS account because reverb is high on its shipping options. Even their site says you can save up to 74% of the cost. The cost to get many pieces of well built rack gear repaired can be 500 bucks including shipping to and fro if it doesn't use special parts. When you paid 250 for it shipped working like the still solid Drawmer DL241 and Alesis Midiverb II, it's just not worth getting it fixed when you can just buy something new or use a plug. Then there is labor. For extensive repairs of boutique gear, especially poorly designed or manufactured older gear, newer gear with SMT parts, or anything tape, the cost can be out the ass for labor if the manufacturer doesn't fix it themselves anymore or have a dedicated service department. All of these budget manufacturers (I'm including many historic storied brands in this) just send the boards right back to China or Africa to be stripped for precious metals and pollute the village water tables and send a new board to their authorized service center to screw into your case and solder the controls to and charge you whatever they think they can get away with charging you. |

Used prices on Reverb are silly.... sometimes 10% off a new one plus the outrageous shipping.
I have a client who works at a large national retailer (you know the one) and gets me 20% off, plus free shipping to a neighboring state with no sales tax. I don't see the reason to pay the same price (sometimes more!!!!!) for a used piece anymore.

A benefit we may/may not want to consider… the used prices are high so that can help a balance sheet of assets look nice, if applying for lending. So a loan agent can do a search and see… yep that console really is worth $700k
