The Time Domain Reflectometer is a special piece of equipment created in the early 80s as a special test device capable of testing how long a wire is plus if there is a break in one of its conductors. It uses a series of pulses and analyzes the return currents compared to the multi frequency pulse it sends through the wire. Later another piece of equipment was created for CAT5 and CAT6 called a network analyzer, that operates on this principal.
Now these days these two are combined into the TDR. My personal favorite is the Triplett TDR100.
