At my request my wife got me a dbx 560A 500 series compressor for Christmas. Since they are inexpensive I thought it would be fun to try it out and see if it is actually useful. If it sucks I can sell it for what she paid for it or just leave it in the rack to fill an empty hole. It might come in handy for something at some point. I haven't used it yet but got it installed into the rack yesterday.

I’m sure you will find a use or 2 or 3 or 4……

Its good on some things, like bass and kick. I use its big brother, the 160a on bass.

I tried a couple and just couldn’t ever get along with the attack behavior. I sent them back.

It's got REALLY nice lights. Yes it does. It seems to me that almost every compressor's description includes "good for kick or bass," or at least that's what they're heralded for. Some add snare to that. I get it. Kick and bass are the most destructive when it comes to transients with snare and vocals fighting for second place.

Tell you one thing: The new Chambord BLOWS it away.

Awesome on kick drum. It’s my go too.

It's got REALLY nice lights. This is the best backhanded compliment I've read this year, and December is almost over.

Tell you one thing: The new Chambord BLOWS it away. Is the Chambord a VCA modeling itself after a DBX?

I love my Revive modded DBX 160a. They also mod the 560a, so if you find it wanting modding it is an option.

I love mine! I’ve got 2, and use them on toms on every drum session.

If you’ve got space to fill in the rack, 560A are great, I really like it on kick drum and electric guitar.

I have a 160x and a 560a. They are similar, but the 160x generally wins out when I am going for that sound. Most DBX equipment has a specific sound, the 560a is no different. The 160x sounds a little bigger at the same settings and gain reduction.
In the end, its DBX compression.
