(@ High Tenor)...In that boat too. Even "just for" vocals. Especially LOUD ones. Seems usually best then to really rehearse. Then go to someone else's set up Pro Studio. More practical. Like renting the fishing boat. Versus buying it. Chris I have a studio in the loft of my house and it’s on a proper floating steel floor - so noise wise I can record vocals and crank my ATC 25’s …. even very late at night. But drums and paino that’s a whole other category of SPL !! A studio in the back garden is the answer - but it would have to have a commercial element to it and reading threads in recent years I get the very strong impression the trade just isn’t there anymore. Everyone at the level I’d be offering records at home and the “stars” are using the big commercial studios with named famous producers. So it would be potentially a vanity project …. I’m not sure it’s justified here in 2024! I’ve thought about renting a place to track real drums - it’s the obvious solution.A less obvious would be having a drummer lay his tracks to your scratch tracks at his place. There are several on this forum that do this very reasonably.

Finish the metal album I’ve been mixing off and on for four years that has already seen four complete remixes because the leads were not recorded when the rhythm section was tracked almost ten years ago. Guitarists kept flaking out.

Buy less, listen more. I'd like to get a better handle on using and hearing subtle compression. Also, I'd really like to have a better command of getting my mixes to translate better. Username checks out There's still like a week left in 2023. PLENTY of time left for some gratuitous and frivolous gear acquisitions.

They put "Vocals Extraordinaire" on Beck' Truth Album. For Rod Stewart. Well... By the same token, Tony is a "Drummer Extraordinaire"! Chris

Incredible dynamic Duo like Page/Plant, and Townsend/Daltrey. Wood/Waller are fantastic too. Along with John Paul Jones/Nicky Hopkins/Moonie's contributions. Chris P.S. Like George Plimpton asked if he found a "young F. Scott Fitzgerald... I'd dance down the street myself. if/when a young group that would happen again!

Record some singles, work fast and simple so I don't go too far down the rabbit hole.
Invest in room treatment (DIY Hemp Bass Traps) before I buy any more recording gear. Likewise no upgrades or additions to the mic/vocal chain until I get the room sorted out and hear what the existing chain "really" sounds like.

Write and finish more music, and stop trying to reinvent the wheel/tossing compositions out as soon as they remind me too much of an existing piece of music.

Collate and release my own audio journey picture book. Make better headway/progress towards defining the scope of my goals in making my first commercial microphone. Much more work and $$$ needed there.

To no longer take jobs that I am suspicious aren't worth it(and are likely a total PITA and will end up making $5 an hour on).
That's the cynical me(which is now the majority). The more positive spin is to believe in my skills and charge my worth and stop accepting low balls. This means I will work less but that is fine. I am a musician first and foremost so that just gives me more time to gig and practice etc.

To hone my craft and always seek to improve and also step outside my comfort zone. Timely. Am practice recording my stumbling-sometimes pretentious readings of selected Shakespeare. Jeremy Irons watch out! I Shall Spareth Thee Of Infernal Diatribes. And Hackneyed Love Sonnets. (Thank me later ) Chris

I'm hoping to record a full album in my not-long-ago finished basement studio. I've done various bits so far, with a recently recorded single sounding better - and less "basement" - than I was expecting. I've brought in a few drummers and a couple bass players. Nice to have a cozy space for basic tracking. I'd also like to bring in experimental players for more improvisational recording. At some point, I'll bring engineer Oz Fritz back to help me with tracking. His studio was the inspiration for mine and he came down a couple months ago to check it out/give it his nod of approval. Really, it's just a room with some modest gear, but it's got a bit of vibe. People are the vital element at this point.

Spoken Word may have as much $$ potential (or more) than Vocals, later in 2024. Was pretty happy with this partial Reading of "Late Lament". Written by the late "Moody" Drummer Graeme Edge. Long ways to go to (hopefully/someday) get close to Mike Pinder's (tremendous) recital, but I'm trying nonetheless. Chris P.S. Travel set up. AKG P120 and a moderate dose of MJUC Compression (due to close miking). Another "one take" and RAW otherwise.

master more freelance stuff and find more clients.
Get my first Atmos projects out there in the world.
Finish more projects rather then tweak them(personal projects).
