I got a message from apple today about extending my applecare plus on my m1 mini, looks like $40/year.
I didn’t know this was a thing?

Keeping coverage for like .12 cents a day, with m1’s being 3 years young and untested for longer periods, seems like good value here too.

Doesn't seem that bad a value. Apple Care has saved me a ton of money on a few separate macbooks in the past. If I had opted to get it for my mac mini M1, I would probably go for the extension too.

I've had good experiences with Apple with/without apple care. Just recently, I fired up my Macbook pro mid-day on a Thursday, only to have it give give me a blank screen after attempting to come up. Managed to get an appointment with an Apple store that afternoon (same day genius bar appointments are unusual, I got lucky) and they said it needed to be handled by their depot. It was over-nighted to Texas on Friday, repair completed on Saturday, and on my front doorstep by lunch time on Monday. Nothing but stellar service from them, and it all covered by Applecare.
On a separate macbook pro laptop outside of applecare and outside of warranty (it was about 4 years old) I had something in it fail, wouldn't boot. $600 and 4 days later they had completely rebuilt the inside of the laptop: main logic board, screen, and a new bottom shell for good measure. Essentially a new (old) computer at that point. That laptop ran another 4 years before I retired it (apple stopped updating the OS on it and a newer machine became necessary)
$40/year totally worth it and make sure you keep backups of it. On these newere laptops disk storage is soldered to the motherboard so if they have to replace that, the data is lost.

Thx, in case you don’t know, you can use OLP to load unapproved mac os onto older macs.
I’m running ventura on my 2012 mbp.

Thanks, was not aware of that - will check it out. I generally don't look for a reason to NOT buy a newer computer
