I just looked at the site
and it looks cool but I SUCK at soldering, and building and in some cases reading anything that isn't Calvin and Hobbes.
I'd love to try though. What do you guys recommend for a sweet front end?

Is the VP26 basically a 312?

hey jordan, check the DIY forum on this site, the "real DIY" thread has links, i would get some of peterson goodwins simple projects to cut your teeth on, then the capi 26's are cake, all the capi stuff has great build support, documentation(see Chunger at groupdiy) and sounds tremendous!

There is a reputable builder by the name of Don Voth in the city, no relation but he does offer courses where he'll build with you showing you how I build everything. I'm think 16 312 sorta preamps and 16 missing links for my front end. ITB has been so good to me once I learnt to track better.

i'm all about a consistent footprint as well(meaning pre's/eq's of the same) If i was to go that huge, id be vp28 all the way, that being said, your idea is crazy good also. would be scary! Youd be able to fill up that console thats on its way? read as much as you can on all capi's offerings before making a choice would be my advise.
have fun
BTW, moving OTB will knock your socks off man!

Hey Tony if I was EVER going back OTB it's with the Rascal Audio Tonebuss. I need that recall, I'm 23 and grew up in the computer age. I dig the computer a lot.
But let's entertain that console, where do I go to read about it?? How much? Is she under say 20k?

I will build some CAPI stuff for sure eventually. Just wanted to throw this out there for those not looking for 500 stuff that's already ready to go. The Warm WA 12 is about as good a piece of kit as one can ask for in a half rack pre. It's like this for me, I own a pair and they may be the best pres I own and I've owned some heavy hitters including the Martech MSS-10. Matter of fact, I usually shoot these two out for a vocal pre and pick the Warm as much or more as the Martech. Beautiful on stereo acoustic guitar and just as good on guitar cabs. Bryce has really built a winner here.
We need him here by the way. I'll shoot him an e-mail.

cowboycoalminer you read mind I was just about to ask about the WA12. I'd probably get it in 500 series. I need 16. Maybe 8 API and 8 Neve types.

I've heard the Warm audio stuff is nice, but no experience, like to try www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=37941.320

I love the idea of a little 8 channel board for mixing. 1- Kick 2- Snare 3- Drums L 4- Drums R 5- Bass 6- GTRS L 7- GTR R 8- Lead Vocal and then have FX all return on Auxes or busses. Recall would be an issue though, it would be damn pricey to get this sort of arrangement. Here's an old post at the old site of something that I kind of at in mind, funny how this site isn't so petty and I can link to it. www.gearslutz.com/board/8215832-post16.html

I've been sitting here spinning in my chair. I need 8 Neve types, 8 API types and 8 of those missing links.
The whole console, summing thing to me is a money pit and it adds time to recall and drains me. I'm not a gear guy really.
Leading me to this question, in the Daw centric world why are there no 8 channel lunchboxes?

a cheaper solution is the put 2 vp28's on the master buss and mix through them. you can use them for tracking then also. they are excellent on the master buss.

Hey Jordan - and anyone that's interested. I can put you in touch with a guy here that built mine. Incredible build. He's a tech guy for a local amp company here. $100 a module. That's freaking dirt cheap. I contacted him and asked him if he would be cool with me putting peeps in touch and he's game for doing a couple or more a week. Pm me for info.

Hey Johnkenn I may take you up on that, I do want to learn how to build though. I feel that given I grew up with a daw and don't even know how to use tape that I at least got to learn this. I feel for the guys that know all this stuff and are now competing against computer operators.

I had a good convo with gouge and from what I gather it's either the V28 or the 312.
Reading reading reading.

Just got off the phone with the local tech. This September I'm going to start the build. I expressed interest in not dying and the tech assured me that building my own PSU would be quite easy as well as the 500 series rack.
