I seem to be having bad luck with my sa67 tubes getting noisy.
I’d like to hear the mike with a little less mid range push.
Is there a non nos, current tube people would recomnend ?

I just had a chance to spend some time with a SA67 MKII with 3 tube options. Stock tube, Tung-Sol and Telefunken. The Tung-Sol was the smoothest and my favorite of the bunch. It did a nice job of smoothing out the midrange and extended the high end a bit.

I have two SA67s mk1and they have had an audible buzz since the day I got them. Haven’t really used them much bc of this. Could it be a tube issue?

Yes, the mike should be pretty well silent, or you have a ground or shielding problem. If you bought them new, i’d get them bench tested under warrenty or pay for it yourself.

I'd be interested in hearing your voice through all three tubes I tend to always favor NOS tubes but it really depends on the voice on each individual

Attachment DeletedI ordered a tung sol, also put my original tube back in, Stam had sent me a replacement, now the original is very quiet, not spitty:,weird but I’ll take it. Also, experimenting with omni, seems less mid forward, liking it in my room: great mike(mkii) with tim’s capsule!

Unfortunately the drastic drop in temperature around here(North Carolina) wasn't too kind to my voice so these may be for my ears only LOL.

I’ve never been to Ottawa. My wife is from Alberta so I’ve been all over there and BC. Beautiful country!

I have the mkI and it has the Heiserman capsule in it. I think they went to the Tim Campbell capsule on mkii. Regarding the tubes, I have a Philips, two Valvos and a Telefunken. They are all quite different. The Telefunken is the smoothest and most hi-fi sounding of the lot and the Philips is bigger, warmer, rounder.... less top end. I sometimes prefer it to the Tfunk although it seems a little microphonic. The Valvo tubes are right in between I would say, a good compromise and pretty affordable.

My new tung sol gold pin showed, plugged it in, powered up: whisper quiet, quieter thsn all my nos fancy pants tubes.
Initial impression of tone is also very positive: it seems very ckear and detailed, smooth but not rolled off, flatter but not thin.
Thx Josh, super pleased so far!

Well as far as tube microphones go EF86 tubes are not particularily long lifed. They probably last as long as a 12ax7. In the old days it was not uncommon to walk into a studio with U67s and most would have microphonic tubes.

I have to get credit to Mark Kano , he loaned me his mic and had a few tubes to try out so that was super helpful & informative.

I definitely preferred the Tungsol to the stock Russian tube but after using the Telefunken ef806S more - I do believe I prefer it. At least on voice. I've always had issues with ef86's being microphonic in my Matchless. I found a great sounding NOS Amperex and have probably played over 800 gigs with it. The JJ ef806s I found to also be non-microphonic in guitar amps. Haven't tried it in the SA67 yet though.

I tried a Electro Harmonix tube yesterday and after tweaking some values I was pleasantly surprised on how close I could get it to the Telefunken.
I have not tried the TungSol but will soon.
This gives me a glimmer of hope as I literally have the last 75 NOS tubes left and didn't want to build more 67's without them but playing around with the capsule polarization and circuit impedance you can do wonders.
I'll post some audio clips soon
