Well, should we ask Tom first ? Queue the long string of bad jokes now. I guess we should check with Tom's wife, Mrs Turkey? Ah, wait, you’re not the straight man ?

So recordingengineer, when you say Neve preamp, are you talking 1073/1084 style? I heard some videos of a guy using a rack of the Heritage 1081 clones and thought it sounded wonderful. Now, the EQ was being used, so that is a difference. But the 1081 is cleaner, no?

These are truly amazing on toms. ehrlund.se/product/ehr-e/?v=f003c44deab6Not cheap though!! Really hot output, you won’t need much gain from any pre-amp you choose and so you’ll be virtually removing the sound of the pre from your equation I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been… This close… To buying one of those to try out! I keep on hearing great things about Ehrlund, in general, as long you keep tons of distance. I still have yet hear a sample I’ve like yet though! None have been tom samples though.

Now, the EQ was being used, so that is a difference. But the 1081 is cleaner, no? Tighter bass and less mids, so yeah, cleaner I suppose. My original line of thought is Neve-direction in general. Of course, some are worse than others here. 1073/1084 are definitely the worst here, but even the Shelfords at the studio I’m not happy with on toms. Of course, it’s also very much how the toms are. If they’re boomy already (many many times they are), that’s probably the times I just want to pull my hair out, has made me come to my realization, and prompted this thread.

I remember ages back someone posted a kit miced up with a slew of expensive pre-amps (might have been BAE/ Neve pres) I heard the tracks and they sounded great! Only thing was …. he’d been very sneaky Every 10 seconds he’d spliced the track to the kit recorded with the pres on a Mackie desk Pissed off a heap of people and raised a few eyebrows in equal measure. I remember, being honest, not noticing anything myself until knowing about the pre switch and then being able to hear it
