I have been building a tracking system and putting together a old school studio rhythm section for the last few years at a Northward Acoustics
room which I am producer in residence. I hesitate to say but I am actually satisfied for what may be the first time in a long time. I want to share
my current setup with my Nerds here at RGO. . I am not saying I am halting the purchase of gear for the record its just I am digging the setup.
In addition I also put together a video system which is simple POV cams in the Booth and on the players and have a
Black Magic Pocket Cinema Cam for more detail as well as the Atem switcher.
Anywhooo feel free to suggest what I need to buy next and here is the culmination of my gear journey thus far...

Oh, nice, some custom JCF stuff. What's the SQZ2 compressor next to the Iron Age stuff? It is a custom vactrol compresser made to be invisable for vocal tracking. Josh is badass! |

Well, I see your problem, you have reached the level most dream of. Congratulations, while some of it might not be my personal preference I have to admit a I’m a bit jealous.
Yeah some big ATC’s would be fun and offer different perspective from the Dutch and Dutch we are talking serious money.
A couple of directions I would look at ;
1. Infrastructure, what’s going to make my life easier, cabling, stands, mic cases etc.
2. Possible dive into Atmos, immersive audio.
3. While you have a mic collection most would kill for there are always mics out there to discover enjoy taking a flyer on some things you haven’t tried. Honestly some of the most fun I have had as a gear nut was my period of time where I was “ the Blackbird of Dynamics”, over 120 work horse dynamics. It was fun discovering what a $70 D190, RE15 or DS35 were capable of.
Plus diving into the less appropriated LDC and SDC’s that flew under the radar.
4. A deeper dive into video?
Just some ideas.

The Atmos thing is tempting but my mix room currently is not gonna work for it...(plus my wife would kill me)
I want some more dynamics for sure especially funky sounding ones.
The Video thing is a work in progress for certain.

One of the things I dislike about moving back into live SR is that even in the small scale world where there are not riders is that certain mics are expected and something different is frowned upon. The funny thing is I made my reputation coming up by using mics other than the usual 57’s & 58’s. While not dirt cheap I keep seeing these Sanken MC7 dynamic Omni ENG mics I want to try as well Samara’s new Side address SDC and the Sanken side address SDC’s. |
