Kind of inspired by the Mitch Mitchell thread, I though I'd get something started about a drummer who always KILLS though some don't even know his name. He did a Snare session at 606 for Lauten and It's awesome.

It kind of defeats the purpose of a special snare mic when you have a drummer that can do his thing THAT good. He's balancing the set as needed, you can record it with a minimum of mics and barely treating the tracks. To demonstrate the "special powers" of a snare mic you need a so-so drummer that you will have to tweak for a balanced mix.

I've watched that video so many times... If we were back in the VHS days, there would be no high end left and there would probably be weird little wiggles from tape stretch! Great interview! Also pretty chocking that he didn't start drumming until he was 21.

He must have had proper training. - his uses a matched grip in the first video but a traditional grip in the Bill Evans video.

Love what he's doing with Bill Withers. So tasty groove. Been sitting and trying to mix a little motown sound on my drums for a while in the studio and get that hang between triplets and straight in the playing. Incredibly fun and you can't get enough of it. Here I played with an old Ludwig kit from the 60s and played with the UA Hitsville Chamber. Was only OH monomic and some bd amb. Very simple! MOTOWN SOUND
Now I have to go and listen to some more J.Gadson clips on the tube

I would volunteer as the worlds worst drummer, which i clearly am - and i can proof it!!! Maybe i should get a wrestling mask and brand me as "10-ton-hihat-Harry" a kind of evil superhero.... I mean, i'm unimpressive on bass ..but on drums ... i suck hard. The slogan should be "even with a drummer as bad as this, the snare mic can save your ass" or something.

I got my concept ready. Quote 10-ton-hihat-Harry: "i put the hat back in hate!!!" Lauten - do you hear me? Gimme a mic and you can have the concept, i also design you the evil superheros costume and if you fly me to the set i'll be the drummer you need.

It’s just so easy when the players can play at this level. This guy plays ok, I guess - a good feel. I recently went to see Dave Weckl and Tom Kennedy (bass) It kinda redefines the concept of great rhythm section. It was a really small club, so we were close up. My mind was suitably blown, absolutely incredible control and musically - the pinnacle I think! I’ve played drums for 48 years (turned pro at 18!) and I was watching Weckl and at moments thinking omg what is he playing - it’s beyond comprehension and as he’s doing it, he’s so relaxed and just grinning and looking so cool. I like to reserve the word “great” for those few very, very special players. Everyone is is just “good” And I’m “terrible” lol

Hey, is it me, or are some of these Lauten videos oddly thin on promoting the mics? You've got Darrell Thorp sat there, but he's just shooting the shit the whole time. It's fun to "hang out", but I still think it's a curious way to market a thing.
EDIT: I partly take it back. The one with Joey Waronker is a bit more informational.
