I have a sick kid, so no time for tinkering and level matching - I'm hoping you all can manage that on your own (you might do a better job than I anyway). Should be pretty clear what's what. There are 4 sets. Included are: 414B ULS, BU67 (U67 voicing, no pad, no mod switched in), Lawson 251, Stam Tube87, and Shannon Rhoades/Mic Rehab 251 with his capsule (I have another with a Heiserman cap, but didn't get that in there). All files are 44.1/24 - that's what I usually record with. I believe all of the tube mics had a hot enough output that I just used an Audioscape D comp for some level - no gain reduction. I used a Sebatron VMP4000e for the C12AFET and the 414. Group 2 had 3 tube mics, so I used an Audioscape V3A for level for the Lawson, again no gain reduction. These were done in my tiny drum room, capsules more or less in the same place, around head high in front of the kit - usually what I use for overheads (my ceiling isn't super high as these recordings likely indicate). No idea how helpful others might find them, but this helped me make a decision about what I'm keeping/buying/plan to buy. Would have done pairs, but didn't have pairs for all of these, so this seemed like the best move. I just uploaded this, so should be good for downloading til Nov 10th or so. If folks are still finding useful, I can put a new upload link in the future. go.wetransfer.com/t-oRfRe8280GThere are other drum mics for each pass, but including would have made this multiple download links instead of just the one. If anyone is dying for them, I can try uploading again at a later date. Most of these are a friend playing, one pass is me playing. Both of us are bashers. This is admittedly my first mic shootout. While I'm certainly open to constructive criticism, don't be a dick about it, please.

Thank you for taking the time to do this! I've been really interested in hearing the differences between the BC12A Tube and FET. I hope your kid feels better asap! đđź

Thanks for doing this! Just did a quick level match and listen through.
Sounds like the BC12 fet is a little crispy - maybe the mic or preamp is getting overloaded a little(?). If this could be avoided, the bc12fet would probably be my favorite for all clips. I liked the tube version too, but it is a lot more different (and darker) than expected, and i'm wondering if its preamp/d-comp related.
The bu67 has a very cool midrange and i really want a pair now!
Basically, every time i thought a mic was cool, one of the beesneez sounded cooler. Gotta get some of their mics in here.
Which are your favorites?

So I did this with a couple engineer friends. We all thought the C12FET was a bit harsh up top in solo but in context, it actually worked quite well. And I think it compliments the BU67 and 414BULS nicely - between the three of them, I feel like I have a lot of bases covered.
I didnât think the FET C12 was clipping - I think itâs just awfully bright
Also, I was ready to sell my BULS pair but decided to keep âem after this.
I came into this expecting to return the FET and buy a pair of the tube C12s but if anything I def want another FET and maybe a second tube 87. Also wouldnât be sad if I had another BU67 or two. Still gotta try 269 mode on that one - maybe my next drum tracking session.

This is a random zoom in on a drum hit on the bc12 tube vs fet - fet on the bottom. Something isn't fully clean in the fet signal path. I'd love to know if this is in the mic or the pre, as i'm hoping to snag a pair for overheads.

Seems unlikely the mic would be clipping - it was prob about 5â in front of the kit and while Iâm sure it was plenty loud, itâs nothing even the cheapest of condensers would clip for - not like itâs right on a cranked 100 watt amp or anything.
I would guess the blame would lie in the pre - a Sebatron VMP4000e. Iâm using the 25dB pad as I always do when micing anything loud. I believe the pad is achieved by adding negative feedback. The gain is set around 2 on the dial (out of 10). While the unit can certainly get crunchy, it didnât seem to for any of us in the room. Itâs my go to pre for FET overheads and bass cab mics if they arenât tube mics

Saw that....definitely a FET? It's on both pages for the tube and the FET so I wasn't sure. Does sound really good and I don't have a C12 capsule mic. If it's for sure the FET, it might be my next mic.

Not sure if it's tube or fet. PHdamage sent me files of both on drums, they are amazing. The Fet was my favorite !

Not sure if it's tube or fet. I'd say tube for the sweet delicate top end, could be wrong. PHdamage sent me files of both on drums, they are amazing. The Fet was my favorite ! I'd love to hear those if they're still around!

I don't know if I should support Phdamage by sharing his files, or don't do it, to not step on his toes ^^'... Usually, in doubt I don't do nothing. But I think he'll be ok with me doing a wetransfer to you, like he did for me. PM me, nick8801 .

I honestly think Iâm leaning toward grabbing the long body BC12. I think it lives really well next to the FleA 49 and U87 in this video. I wish I could find more samples of the mic.
I may have just watched âThe Greatest Night in Popâ âWe are the Worldâ documentary. Listening to all those different artists sing through C12s got me really considering getting a decent C12 style mic in here. I think I want to go traditional style/sound though.

The BC12 does sound quite nice in that video. There's a couple of surprises in the video, too.
