I recently bought some JBL 4311's that I'm powering with an Avantone CLA-200 amp. They are great secondary monitors for hyping up the room and doing production work. They do have a ton of low end, but they don't quite provide that sub sound.
I'm looking for a very transparent sub that I can easily bypass, and one that has a customizable crossover, so I can really dial it in with them. It's a small-ish, treated room. Looking in the $350-600 range, and willing to spend a bit more if necessary.
My only real hold up right now is there seem to be a lack of in depth subwoofer reviews. The thing I'm worried about right now is transparency. I don't want my monitors running through a sub if it's going to color them at all. If I was filtering the sub myself and running it parallels to my system, I would probably just buy a cheaper one and just dial it in. I am not doing any heavy mixing work on these JBL's, they are mostly just fun speakers to do production stuff on, however they have actually been helpful in checking low-mids recently. I just don't want to buy a cheap ass sub and lose the clarity of these monitors by running my cables through them.
Let me know if you guys have any ideas or suggestions. Right now I'm looking at the KRK S10.4 and 10S2, the Adam Sub7 and Sub8.

On the new market SVS Micro 3000 at $899 is where decent subs really start. There is a Dayton Audio 12in kit people like but I can’t remember which one. My secret for subs with crappy covers is this : find a point that works. Then order a pair of Harrison Labs Passive high pass filters. www.hlabs.com/products/crossovers/index_files/Page395.htmY your line level out take one of the outputs to the sub using the built in crossover, other one to the amp for the JBL’s via the Harrison labs in line filter. If you are really handy a Pair of used JBL 18’s in DIY boxes add amp ch and a used TDM crossover.

Update: I ended up grabbing a RCF Ayra Pro10 10" subwoofer. It sounds fantastic and makes the JBL's sound massive. I am barely using it, crossover around 55-60hz, and level is very low. It really makes them sound amazing. Only one day of use, but so far very pleased. Figured I would leave an update here if anyone searches for this question later.

Wondering what you mean by "crappy covers" when it comes to subs? And will the Harrison filters only work when you need output for a passive subwoofer?
I have a huge (roughly 15db) dip at 110hz in my room after a bunch of REW measurements, and would like to find a sub for my Focal Shape Twins that has a crossover at 120hz (or close) to cover that valley, but it seems very difficult to find any *affordable* active subs with a crossover at or near 120hz (or variable).
Any thoughts? Could I somehow use an external crossover to feed a JBL LSR310S out of the line outs on my MOTU interface?
