I would like to try out the Gold and Silver. The silver by design is very interesting.
The Ref Cardiod is pretty subpar by today's standard. Terrible capsule ring and distorted mids. My feeling when I tried it was that time has kind of ran it's course. It sounded like an ok Chinese clone at best and except the terrific looks it felt more like a 1k product then 3.5k..
Funny thing is that I never heard anyone saying that they love Manley mics. The gold is said to be extremely bright and the Ref. C a disappointment.

I find that curious too, that you don’t hear or see a lot of people talking them up ?

John Feldman uses the gold on all his productions I believe. I think Katy Perry’s studio mic is the ref c. I love the silver but I could never pony up that much cash for one!

The Manley Golds are really nice. Bright, yes, but not strident or harsh. Kind of a C12 vibe.
The Silver is cool, though I don't find myself reaching for it a lot. It's unique and it sounds great, but it's not a timbre I've found a lot of use for personally.
They certainly are pricey though...

I always thought the Ref C sounded very open and clear on the pop recordings it’s been used on. Are you implying there is another/cheaper option out there to get that sound?

I thought most mics I've tried has been better. Allot of K67 style capsules including Neumann excibit capsule ring at around 2.5-3.5khz. The Manley had one of the worst ringing I've heard. Chose whatever mic in the 2-3k range and they'd probably sound better then the Manley.

The Ref C (and TLM 103) should include a protective lead shield! Although that could be a plus for rodental vector control. Chris

I had the Ref C for a few days. It was obviously a high end mic, sounded very good, but I preferred other brands. There was something about it that bugged me.
My Stam SA47 sounds better, the SA67 sounds better. The Soyuz 0-19 FET had better balance, even though it's not their tube version.
If someone says they like the Manley, well OK, it's not unreasonable. If was buying a new high end mic though, I'd much rather have the Chandler REDD, the Soyuz 0-17, or the Stam SA47.

The Key to the Ref C and the VTL mics is the time and effort in selecting the best of the Chinese capsules they use, I want to know where all the rejects end up? The Ref C isn’t really my taste but yeah it works for some.

I feel like those are just completely different mics. The Manley Ref C does a very specific thing. I’ve yet to hear anything less expensive that does what it does with that level of class.

I would really like to try a Silver. I have a FET and tube 017 and absolutely love them, but the Silver is an intriguing design. Just so damn expensive.
