I had to have the PSU in my original Focusrite ISA428 rebuilt about 4 years ago. Those were notorious for overheating when not well vented and I found out the hard way. I haven't had any issues with it since. It's not packed tight in the rack anymore. I left some space around it and put it close to the bottom of the rack instead of the top where it used to be. Focusrite changed the PSU's in the newer models and I am told they don't have that problem. I leave it turned off when not using it. Other than that it's been a great unit. I bought it used back in about 2009 and used the crap out of it for years.

I have that original ISA428 (which I bought new in 2005) - mine has a space empty around it for same reason -- you could quite possibly cook an egg on it if you don't leave room for it to cool - still gets hot. The newer ones use switch-mode supplies (much more efficient, thus not wasting energy as heat) - agreeing with you about the cooler operation (and likely much longer lifetime before needing repairs).
It's not a preamp, but I have an old RND 5043 compressor that needed some simple work --> one of the opamps (NE5534 I believe) was basically "walking wounded" --> completely noisy. RND did diagnosed/replaced the part for a totally fair price, super quick turn around. Point being, I think it runs warm for similar reason as original ISA428.

I've had to have both my Chandler Germanium preamps serviced and also my TG-2. My Tone Controls are kinda acting funky sometimes so I imagine I'll have to send them in soon, too. They're pretty dang old now though, so I guess that's reasonable. It's kind of annoying, but I love the sound of these units so I'll just deal with it. Oddly enough, my LTD-1's are even older--they gotta be near 20 years old now and haven't needed servicing (yet). My only other pre that's more than 10 yrs old is my HV-3C and that hasn't ever needed any servicing.

I had to send back my LaChapell 583S MK2 soon after purchase for noise issues. LaChapell was great about it; fixed the problem quickly. Still have it and use it regularly. Recommended.

I have original API 512B's -- YES - B's not C's -- single digit serial numbers. From the early 80's. They have never needed servicing in 40+ years.

Chris Johnkenn, we really need a 'Junk' or 'Useful cheap stuff' sub-forum . . . for things you wouldn't expect to be great because they cost very little. Persons headphone boxes spring to mind, Aphex 107 preamps as well . . . quite a few 'junk' pieces that are found in a lot of studios. Remember, Once Upon a Time, an 1176 was considered junk.

The Harvey Gerst and his son Alex @ Indian Trail/Texas... Probably still use their Studio Projects VTB-1 for their 77 Ribbon. Now Type C Exciter? Might be curable. Might not. Chris

In theory absolutely great idea, the problem is in the real world it’s way to easy to have a bad run, worse if a part fail safter time. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of bad designs out there, but I have also seen way to many products get a bad rep because after 2 years the capacitor they went to because they couldn’t get their preferred cap leak like a Congressman.
