My late friend Chris Garges used 4038s more than anything in his collection on his 1966 Yamaha C7, and it sounded glorious. Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear that Chris passed. I remember him from TapeOp...he contributed quite a bit early on IIRC. I appreciated his stuff TapeOp, too. Yeah, Chris battled cancer for 5-6 years. He died on Two-Two-Tuesday. I miss the hell out of him. His long time intern/assistant/friend Daniel Hodges is running Old House now. Here's the Tape Op thread I started to announce his passing. Chris Garges

Sure, but if you go here you can hear examples, see pics, listen to comments, and get Fletcher explain to me how I broke "Blumlein". gearspace.com/board/gear-shoot-outs-sound-file-comparisons-audio-tests/150891-ribbon-madness-some-comparisons.html"For the comparison I had 2 sets of mics "in" the piano and some outside as well. Mic sets 1 & 2 (they are as close together with ribbons lined up as best as I could get them) were - as I said earlier - "inside" the piano. The "L" mic is located towards the keys, about 10" inwards towards the middle of the piano from the hammers firing not towards the strings, but towards the L/R outside edges of the piano. Those mics were about 10" off the strings. The second set of mics, "R", were down towards the end of the piano, maybe 18-24" from the end about midway L to R and also about 10" off the strings. BUT this mic was firing towards the strings and towards the lid. It's kind of like a blumlein setup where the mics are firing 90 degrees from one another, but unlike a blumlein setup, they are three feet apart at least and turned. Hope that makes sense. If not, it will when I post a picture later." Leave a comment if it helps you!! Oops. Just notice - the pics have been nuked. Too bad unfortunately. A picture tells 1000 words.... An interesting old thread. Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow, a very deep cut. And one I remember very clearly because I have those pics saved - for years! - to learn from. I've uploaded them to this mediafire link but someone else can maybe put them somewhere more permanent. www.mediafire.com/file/4neec59miuwb18q/Coles_Piano_Technique.zip/fileI was fairly young at the time and kind of blown away by the sound in the examples. I still use that technique today with 4038s and now I can see that it was Bill that introduced it to me. Thanks so much, Bill! I get compliments on this sound and would always just say I picked it up from some amazing 'old school engineer' hahaha. Because I always forgot the provenance I could never give credit but that's changed now!
