Aggression gets the sound really loud like Inflator.

Was supposed to be editing today but instead spent most of it messing with this thing. For starters, the default view is still, on its own, a great EQ with pleasing, lightly dense saturation via the Aggression knob. The name of the knob is kind of ironic since it's mostly pretty polite. Beautiful, detailed sound that respects transients - none of the murk I associate with a lot of developers. In line with how precise this company is about everything. Broad, clear moves (and yes you can change the frequency points) and pleasing to the ear. But it's under the hood where things get wild. You can expand/compress the bands, just touch the transients or apply things to sustain, you can blow things up (cranking the input). Adjust the tube saturation to sound very punchy/clean or "sag" and sound closed off. And the character of the distortion can be dialed in with all the controls. You can dial in the onset, the pentode/triode lets you shape what's generated. This is going to take some months to truly master and yeah, it can get fiddly but I am buying it. It's both a great set it and forget it box and something that rewards deliberate moves and vision. Gonna read the manual tonight but first impression is fantastic. Excited to try it on bass. Thank you for this in-depth review; demoing tomorrow. I am a fan of all things Hendy and after getting the Michelangelo irl it made me want one for every channel. This is a much cheaper solution. Finger crossed Tone Projects make a Pollock next; I love that thing, too.

I’ve got the other Tone Projects plugins, but I’m feeling like I’ve got this bag of tricks covered with Crave Transient EQ and Kelvin (folks on GS have been saying the saturation sounds like Kelvin).

Finger crossed Tone Projects make a Pollock next; I love that thing, too. Oh nice. I don't have experience with the Hendy stuff, though the videos on their site have a pretty special "3D" euphony going on. I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on the plugin. Some owners at the other site said it was quite different but still good. The plugin strikes me as a balance between the Hendy character I hear and Tone Project's sensibilities.
I should mention that it's not the lightest plugin on resources - I'm running a Mac Studio at 96k and at pristine it's doing some serious work.
I didn't get to A/B the hw and sw yet, but hoping to this weekend. The curves definitely feel right, and not previously owning Kelvin or Unisum I wasn't familiar with the tonal character of what they make but like it a lot so far. The add-ons with this plugin are really something. I had never imagined the Michelangelo having per band dynamic options, SplitEQ style transient/body controls, a HP/LP, and two parametric bands...so I'm having to re-approach my use cases! Definitely a resource hog as you pointed out, but the Pristine offline render works with my DAW, so I'm going to see how I like using it at lower quality after getting it set up.

This is a super deep plugin. The harmonics/dynamics feel different than my HW unit but it's so flexible and musical its own way.
I like how much you can get from it on a mix with "flat" settings and tweaking the compression, spread, crosstalk, and triode/pentode blend. From there playing with the band drives, mid/side, and trans/body sliders a bit bring some liveliness to the soundstage.
On instruments or subgroups the aggression and pentode mode are rocking. Works well to add high mid energy to vocals and guiars with the response favoring body. Having those dynamic utility bands and high and low cuts is a great bonus.

Interesting (pointed out in the user guide) is that input level gain and Calibration are different. Input level gets things into the nonlinear zone, Calibration changes the onset of breakup, and Compression also adjusts the overall dynamic behavior.
It feels a bit as if Cal and Comp work together like setting a transfer curve knee.
Pretty cool.

I really like the other Tone Projects plugins. This was a must buy for me. Very exciting new ITB tool!

Here's my comparison of the Hardware and Software. The HW sounded more open to me. Especially in the top end. Would have been interesting to hear a pass where you tried to match them on sound rather than settings. Makes me wonder if pushing the highs a little more on the plug would get them closer?

I used to own the HW. Great piece. I wasn't using it enough and needed the money. Could get a little wooly at times, especially pushing the aggression.

I also couldn't hear the air band doing anything on my HW. I tried it on two different pairs of high end monitors (Amphions, D&D 8C's) and headphones. I even reached out to Chris who confirmed via testing that my unit was working correctly. Maybe my ears are shot.

I love my hardware version, but it would be really nice to have the plug in as well.
