Tracking first, mixing second in priority. Which one do you prefer and why? Other?

If I were to use compression in, it'd be with my original Teletronix (UREI/JBL issue). To be honest have friends with, & have heard 100's of, CL1B recordings & they sound great but don't own one so guess my answer is biased & based solely on what I own. Going out, I'm completely inside the box now so it wouldn't matter. And with a good song & good talent these 2 are the defacto compressors & don't think there'd be a difference.

I’ll take a CL1B for the extra attack/release time options.

The Cl1b is similar to the LA2A, so you're kind of comparing different types of apples, not apples to oranges. I've had better final results with the CL1b.

Traking - Highland dyn.BG2. On mixdown, I like the UAD fairchild on some tracks.

Never "got" the CL1B, but do like the LA-2. Prefer Retro STA or Thermionic Culture Phoenix for gentle compression when tracking though. Or an LA-3

Or an LA-3 +1 For my voice, I use a Retro STA Level or Thermionic Phoenix MP. I have an LA2A and I use that on other singers - usually female, bass and acoustic sometimes. All these compressors are great, I’d love a very early CL1A (if I ever get the budget) But generally for vocals my prefer Vari-Mu over Opto or FET.

Have never had the opportunity to use a CL1B.

I wonder how well the CL1B Fixed compare to a 2A. If equally well, it can be argued a more versatile compressor. Then again they differ in tone. CL1B impart topend shine, LA2A more low mid focus? Maybe makes it feel biggger than the CL1B?

They are different from what I know. Feel free to message me if you want

I voted other, because I don't have either of the ones mentioned by name. More often than not I use a Purple Action, or RND 5254. Sometimes both in series.

I do have the UA LA-2A Plug (via a Volt purchase and the "Poor Man's" (rare as hens eggs)... Bellari LA-120 Compressor. Anyway here in the cheap seats... Am addicted to the Free MJUCjr. Plug. Seems to help any of my vocals a bit. This is just a (somewhat comic?) short "one take" of the Intro to "Amos Moses"/Jerry Reed. With one exact repeat, as the one section is only around 10 seconds long. But... The MJUCjr. seems to really help mellow out that typical 58 tone on me. Smoother. Chris

Chandler RS124 have a lovely tone. I used a vintage LA2A for 20 years and I loved it but I prefer the Chandler now and a Buzz SOC M for most opto vocals.

As some may expect here, it did sound somewhat more gritty/dirtier. It's actually a full voltage plate BTW. My guess is that a tube upgrade would enhance it a bit. Might do that eventually, before shelling out for an objectively "better" Compressor. I wish they made a direct Hardware version of the MJUCjr/MJUC! Thanks, Chris
