mix or mastering? VariMu alway ON mastering, but mix : Silver Bullet mk2 > ZOD IDDI > AVID HD I/o -- generally no compressor. Are you using the ZOD pads drbill ? Yes.

Nice guys, thanks for the info! I didn’t realize all the different options that is used to get there, dang that is a lot, not sure I want to change now! I’m just using a couple hardware pieces experimenting. I’m using the Manley Vari-Mu and I’m going to try a few different options with EQ, but it sounds right and huge! These two boxes are doing it for vibe. It’s more of a big hug and vibe, opens up everything with depth and volume. I also have some other various EQ’s and 542’s that are main mix worthy for vibe, but I haven’t even got there yet because on this project we are getting ready to track a few more instruments and I was just messing around with it. It’s really not mastering, but I guess it could be putting the vibe on the main mix then bring it back in to do a soft master. I’m going for sound quality not loudness. I’m working on a singer/songwriter mostly acoustic stuff right now and we aren’t sure we are going to even add any drums or bass even. Maybe some brushes on a snare, or possibly a shaker and tambourine. The songs are pretty much done, just have to add acoustic licks and double tracks, maybe bass, maybe some sort of percussion. We might even be able to use the vocal scratch track because it sounds good to me. I’ve tried a few worthy plug-ins and it just didn’t do it for me. It sounded flatter and lost depth and juicyness even at 3 Db. I guess I’m laser focused on my main mix right now looking for vibe, not mastering.

I don’t have experience with the originals. But for the price, these are really good. Tight bottom end and the air on the 20khz is really nice. I’m sure they’re better out there, but for the price I’m not so sure for the mixbuss sweetener kind of thing. Plug I’ll use them on overheads just a hair when tracking, bass, acoustics and a vocal. Ridiculously smooth is the best way to describe them

Hardware Compressor/EQ I’m replacing my Manley Vari-Mu. What do you think a good replacement would be? Are you mixing for vibe and/or overall music and/or pre-mastering? What is your mix objective? Knowing someone's mix philosophy is essential for giving any free advice . . . Caveat 1: Free advice is often overpriced Caveat 2: Free advice usually costs the giver. Mixing for vibe and pre-mastering My mix objective is to get it sounding as good as I can

CAPI ACA 32 channels feeding buss A and B:
-> Buss A (Music): API 2500
-> Buss B (Vocals): Shadow Hills Dual Vandergraph
A and B summed down (CAPI 2:1 summing mixer) to 1 stereo buss -> Heritage Audio Successor -> Dramastic Audio Obsidian -> Silver Bullet mkI -> Inward Connections DEQ-1 -> Burl B2 Bomber ADC.
This has been the chain for a few years now, and I haven't felt the need to make a change.

Really like that thing. I haven't used many comps on 2-buss but I've never looked elsewhere since I got it many years ago. Very versatile and sounds great.

Has anyone tried Flickinger pres on mix or group busses? Curious how a TwinFlicks would work out recently.
My last mix setup here had a ngBusComp > Maag EQ > RND MBT printing back into our Savitr AD. Sounded great!

Usually some combination of the following. It always starts off as stereo bus processing and then gradually transitions over into mastering... not sure where I draw the line, tbh.
Kirchhoff EQ FF Pro-MB TBProAudio DSEQ Ozone Matching EQ VennAudio FreeClip FF Pro-L
Those tend to be the mainstays. Occasionally, these see some use: Waves AR Vinyl, Goodhertz Lossy, EndeavorFX UnHarsh, bx refinement, Waves SSL Comp (I don't know why, but I still love this one)
Truthfully, I've always wanted a HW EQ & comp for this. I've always felt the stereo bus is right behind vocals as an area that really benefits from having some HW involved. I've actually printed masters through my HW vocal chain and it absolutely does stuff I can't get with plugins. Just sucks having to monitor one channel at a time.

Got my Sonic Farm Creamliner today and first impression was very impressing (final stage on the mix bus). Will soon get some NOS EF86 tubes which may lift it up yet another notch. I don't know if Sonic Farm is well established in the home country (Canada) but surprisingly I don't see/hear much about them on the web. They seem to do really great stuff and I think they deserve more attention
